The report highlights how Women’s Institutes embrace the season with carols gift wrapping and Christmas stories. They host multi-denominational gatherings, collect gifts for hospitals and shelters, and support local children and the aged, fostering unity and charity during December activities.
Orono Skating Club leaders met at Cuomo Rink to map the 1935 season with many senior members returning. Carnival dates set for February 17 and 18, three weeks earlier to avoid prior ice problems, with Dianne Hambly of Oshawa hired as club Pro to teach figure skating. A skate exchange occurred at the Orono United Church Sunday School room this week.
Girl Guides C G I T and Boy Scouts canvassed the village on Saturday morning selling sixty Christmas trees to residents expecting Santa. Each group delivered from door to door with small pickup trucks, raising revenue for the three organizations at Orono Hydro Commission headquarters where sales continue until trees are gone. Mr. W E Armstrong donated the trees free of charge with trees priced at 0.00 each.
Durham County Federation of Agriculture held its annual Pot Luck Supper at Newcastle Community Hall drawing broad farmer attendance. Guest speaker MacIntyre Hood urged better federation relations and land use, while entertainment included a sing song and a quartet.
Heather Social Club held a December 4 bazaar and tea at Oddfellow's Hall with home baking farm produce candy knitted items aprons and Christmas delicacies. A Touch-and-Take Booth and an afternoon tea were featured with a lucky draw awarding tickets to Emma Lunn Chris Sheffield Art White and Hart Taylor.
Two hundred twenty five people gathered in Orono to honor the Orono Baseball Club after winning the OBA D Championship and the Durham County title. A testimonial dinner in Township Hall featured a turkey banquet, speeches, trophy presentations, and jackets bearing the Ontario Championship crest.
The Orono Fish and Hunt Club held its annual meeting December 6 at the Township Hall Orono with many adults and youths present. Officers chosen include President Kere Tolmie. Sec-Treasurer William Grady for a second term. directors Stanley Graham Gerald Duvall Reg Elliott Lloyd Ransberry and Charles Knox. A second film on forest fire observation and prevention followed a discussion on club funding and deer crossing signs to be erected on Enterprise highway. An organized wolf hunt was announced with a meeting at Watson's garage at 9:00 a.m. Sunday.
