Orono Chamber of Commerce plans a bigger parade on Main Street at 1 30 p m with seven floats under construction. The event features the Santa float Old Woman in the Shoe Jack in the Box Santa's Workshop and Cinderella along with school and teen entries led by the Orono High School Majorettes and Crono Brass Band.

Ross Allen presided as the Orono Brass Band held its annual meeting selecting a new slate of officers for the coming year. Bill Allen reelected president with Cecil Alldred reading the financials showing 313.45 in the bank and 185.00 to be collected. The band planned a music purchase and a joint night with the Orono High School Glee Club. next events include leading the Santa Parade at 1 30 Saturday and a January 5 practice.

Fire Destroys Township Home on Clarke Third Concession
A Thursday afternoon fire totally destroyed the home of Mr and Mrs Robert Lennard on the Clarke third concession on the old Gibson property. The cause is undetermined. Newcastle Fire Department could not respond due to a bylaw limiting outside Village calls. A second call went to the Orono Brigade.

Orono Amateur Athletic Plans Winter Activities
Ten directors of the Orono Amateur Athletic Association met in the municipal building to lay plans for the winter season. A new rink pump was installed to be shared with horsemen, with levelling and grounds soaking to begin. Hockey registrations totaled 25 boys, with a second open day planned. no player may participate without registration. The association opened with a $900.68 bank balance and $63 in registration fees. Equipment purchases and new sweaters were discussed, along with forming a Midget or Juvenile team pending player availability.

The W.M.S. Auxiliary gathered amid greenery for a December 1 Christmas meeting led by Mrs. Drummond. Readings, carols, and prayers framed worship with group 4 directing the service. The study centered on Copperbelt mission work and African Women’s Training. preparations for a universal centre and a G.B.A. tea were noted. Seven bales of goods were packed for shipment as officers for 1960 were approved.

Improvements At Ski Hill At Oshawa
Visitors to Oshawa Ski Hill east of Kirby will find an extended ski jump inrun and landing. The 145 foot record jump last year could reach about 160 feet this year due to the longer inrun. Three jumping events are planned including the Junior Southern Ontario Championship and invitation meets. Improvements include wider trails better parking access and a new entrance trail to the club house area.

Clarke voters chose Deputy reeve Russell Lavery by majority 143 over S B Rutherford. Reeve was acclaimed for H Earl Walke. John W Stone led council race with 646 votes, Roy Foster 612, Ernest Dent 446, Albert Knapp 115. Foster will be the new council member, others return.

In Orono a tight Police Trustee contest saw 247 of 550 ballots cast. H. M. Mercer led with 152 votes, closely followed by R. C. Forrester with 139 and Gordon Simpson with 124, winning three posts. Lunn and Hancock trailed, while Rutherford retired and Simpson takes a fifth year.

Darlington and Bowmanville Election Winners Announced
In Darlington township Deputy reeve Garnet B. Richard won reeve in a landslide 1514 to 859 over Roy W. Nichols. Arthur L. Blanchard ousted Allen E. Thompson as deputy along with two new councillors Harold Muir and Sidney Cornish. Fred G. Smith was re elected for a fourth term. In Bowmanville former mayor Sid Little returned as reeve with a 157 vote margin over W. Higgon, and Ross Stevens led the polls with 1160 votes as a newcomer to town council. Seventy percent turnout was not reached. about 47 percent of eligible voters cast ballots. New councillors include Keith Lathangue, O. J. Presson, Glenholme Hughes, Wesley Fice, and Ken Nicks. three newcomers and three defeated incumbents. Mayor W. D. Carruthers and deputy reeve Ivan M. Hobbs were acclaimed. A Hampton pupil returned to dedicate a new Christian Education Centre.

Mosport Ltd outlines car racing project in Clarke Township
Mosport Ltd vice president George Hill and director Alex Duff presented plans to the Orono Chamber of Commerce for a European style road circuit in the northwest corner of Clarke Township. The 2.4 mile paved track, 28 feet wide with shoulders, will sit on 450 acres with tunnels and spectator viewing points. The project aims for a 1960 opening, six annual main events, and frequent weekly races, backed by Canadian business interest though financing remains a challenge.
