Clarke Township Votes Monday For Deputy Reeve And Three Councillors

Clarke Township electors will vote on Monday December 7 to choose a deputy reeve from Russell Savery and S B Rutherford and three councillors from John Stone Ernest Dent Roy Foster and Albert Knapp. The retiring Reeve James T Brown praised local leadership and outlined finance road and planning issues facing the township.

Two Clarke Township School Board Members Do Not Qualify

At the Clarke Township School Area Nomination meeting Harry Wade and Russell Osborne failed to qualify for re election after two year terms. Reginald Elliott will return by acclamation with two new members Truman Henderson and John Kimball. The new board includes Harold Dean Lawrence Greenwood Henderson Elliott and Kimball.

James F Ball Dies After Short Illness At Orono Home

James F Ball aged 81 82 died at his Orono home on Saturday November 14 1959 after a brief illness He was born at Crooked Creek moved to Clarke Township as a child and later lived in Orono He married Violet Virtue in 1912 and farmed at first near Bowmanville later moving to Orono He leaves his wife a daughter Rena a son Kenneth four grandchildren and a predeceased son Lloyd in 1932 He is survived by a brother Howard and a sister Mary Funeral was held November 17 at Barlow Funeral Home with burial in Orono Cemetery.

Public Speaking Winners Named at W C T U Contest

Marilyn Tamblyn and Keith Heron won the Silver Medal Contest held November 27 at Orono United Church Sunday School Auditorium. Eleven contestants competed with Rev. Long as chairman. Judges were Mrs. Arnott Mrs. Armstrong and Mrs. Bairstow.

Silver Wedding Celebration For Hallowells At Orono

The Silver Wedding of Llew and Ada Hallowell was celebrated with 200 guests at Oddfellow's Hall Orono on Saturday November 28. The event featured a blue and silver decor scheme, a three tier cake, gifts of silver and art, musical numbers, and dancing after a formal program and luncheon.

Newly Weds Honoured at Oddfellows Hall Celebration

November 27 event honored two couples Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Wood and Mr. and Mrs. William Dennis. About two hundred guests attended with Carlos Tamblyn master of ceremonies and Marilyn Quantrill reading the address. Each couple received Lazy Boy chairs with accessories while the evening featured dancing to Doreen and James Lowery and square dancing led by Mac Ransberry.

Five Qualify To Run For Orono Police Trustee

The nomination meeting for Orono Police Trustees produced five candidates for three seats. Voting will be held Mon Dec 7 in the Municipal Building with details on past year finances and village projects discussed.

Officially Open New Newtonville School

The Clarke Township School Area Board held the official opening of the new two room Newtonville Public School on Wednesday November 23 with residents, School Board members, builder, architect, Township Council members, and inspectors in attendance. Speaker G L Duffin outlined rural urban education patterns, centralization arguments, and aims including knowledge, vocation, health, beauty, character, and cooperation. Two student musical selections preceded a prayer by Rev White with remarks from Councillors Dent and Stone praising the school’s architecture and interior features.
