Five Candidates Qualify For Three Police Trustees Positions

Electors in the Village of Orono vote December 6 to elect three police trustees from five candidates. Nomination night saw six nominees. C T Miller withdrew. Committee reports cite hydro finances, rate changes, and planned upgrades including a new fire tank and armouries financing.

Hood as Guest Speaker at United Church Laymen's Sunday

Mr. M. McIntyre Hood managing editor of the Oshawa Times-Gazette delivered the sermon at United Church on Laymen's Sunday. He cited a World Student Christian Movement conference at Greyfriars Edinburgh, stressing the global church and the need for men to participate in church work. The service included leadership by Mr. M. H. Staples and Scripture reading by Mr. James Rickaby with the choir singing A Song of Thanksgiving.

Guides Scouts To Sell Christmas Trees In Orono Village

The Orono Girl Guides, the C.G.LT. and the Orono Boy Scouts start a Christmas tree sale this week. Mr W B Armstrong of Orono donated one hundred trees to the three groups. Proceeds will be shared among the local organizations with a possible door to door sale planned for Saturday.

Clarke Township Council Nomination Sees McKay Reeve and New Face Lowery

Taxpayers attended the Clarke nomination meeting as changes in the municipal body were by nomination only. Arthur McKay will be reeve with J T Brown Hart Walkey Fred Lovekin and Hartwell Lowery as councillors, the latter being a new face. School trustees Clinton Farrow and George Morton were appointed for Clarke School Area.

Roma Glanville And Carman Ball Winners in Speaking

Roma Glanville won the girls medal and Carman Ball won the boys medal at a November 26 WCTU speaking contest held in the Orono United Church Sunday School Auditorium. Nine girls competed and judges chose winners amid a close judging process.

Heather Social Club Bazaar and Tea Set for December 4

The Heather Social Club hosts an annual bazaar and tea in the L0.C.F. Hall on Saturday December 4 at 2:30 pm. Vendors offer home baked goods, Christmas cakes, aprons, gadgets, knitting, candy, a Delicatessen Counter, farm produce, and a Touch and Take Booth with surprises. Guests can enjoy tea and lunch while socializing.

Oddfellows Celebrate Opening Of New Hall In Orono

The Orono Oddfellow's Hall on Church Street opened with Grand Master Newton Foster cutting the ribbon. About 145 attendees heard tributes to lodge members and the project, with presentations, a banquet, and an Oddfellow film showcasing community work and hospital aid.

Grand Master talks of bright future for Oddfellowship

Grand Master Newton Foster of Grand Lodge addressed the opening of the new Oddfellow Hall on Thursday of last week. He praised the film shown that evening as evidence of Lodge work and urged broad view of Oddfellowship including hospital beds home care and re establishment programs. He emphasized adapting to changing times through coordination and community service with Rebekahs in Orono and noted strong activity in Ontario and Barrie lodges. (Continued on page 8)

Orono Baseball Night Celebrates Local Champions

Orono hosts a December 7 celebration with a parade of stars a banquet and a two hundred attendee dinner. Ontario Cham p5 Le guests of the sport mingle while prize cups and a James Trophy for Durham County are presented. CKEY sportscaster Joe Joe Drysdale will speak and Bradings square dancers perform creating a festive pageant atmosphere.
