Sixteen former Orono Public School pupils received promotion certificates at the Orono Town Hall commencement last Friday. The program featured the Glee Club performances and room-by-room awards including attendance, academic, music, and sports honors, with remarks on the value of further education and skill-building.

37 Entries Compete In Horti Cultural Christmas Show
The Orono Horticultural Society held its annual Christmas meeting and show in Oddfellow's Hall. Fifty attended as 37 Christmas arrangements competed for prizes including dining table and mantel pieces. Judge Mrs. Harry Jose of Newcastle awarded top honors. slides of Ottawa and the St. Lawrence Seaway were shown.

Euchre Party Thrills Couples Club Night at Armstrong Home
Ten couples gathered Saturday evening December 1 at Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Armstrong house for a euchre party. Mr. and Mrs. Chas Bruce won first and second prizes, Marilyn Hancock took last prize, and many other prizes changed hands amid coffee and hamburgers. The nominating committee announced a 1963 slate with Gladys and Les Asslett as vice presidents, Arthur and Betty Newman as secretary, Kathy and Chas Armstrong as treasurer, and other officers and assistants named. Past president Don and Jeanne Staples were thanked for guiding the club through a busy year.

Orono Band in Christmas Parade Saturday
The Orono Band joins sixteen bands in Bowmanville’s Christmas parade on Saturday December 8. Spectators will see the superb Santa Float with eight reindeer and a large sleigh, built by the Training School Boys. The parade starts at 1 pm and features floats including Nativity Scene Sleeping Beauty Frosty the Snowman and Three Blind Mice.

Orono Approves Municipal Water 2-to-1 in Vote
Orono voters approve a full municipal water system by 207 to 99 with six spoilt ballots, total 312 of 425 participants, paving the way for plans, tenders, and state approvals costing 175000 and aiming to begin around July. The Clarke Township Council will review the result at its mid month meeting.

The Durham County 500 Bushel Potato Club banquet at Bethany featured Dr. John Brown of the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association discussing economic challenges for potato growers. Delbert Olan of Millbrook won the 500 Bushel award. Harvey McGillin of Enniskillen placed second. Pontypool’s Miss Linda Porter, daughter of Mr and Mrs Leonard Porter, was crowned Durham Potato Princess based on 4-H club work.

Unit 6 U C W Unit Meeting Report
The regular Unit 6 meeting on Tuesday November 6 at Mrs John Shetler s home had 13 members present. The group opened with Hymn 15 and a scripture reading followed by devotion and prayer. Discussion focused on idols of the modern age including money status homes and family. There will be no unit meeting in December only the general meeting. A collection was taken and lunch served. The meeting closed with the Mizpah Benediction. Executive will be elected at the January Director s Meeting.
