Orono Chamber renews Christmas decoration contest prizes

At a Thursday meeting the Orono Chamber of Commerce renewed its Christmas Home Decoration Contest with a total prize of 30 dollars for first second and third tied to charity in the winners name. Treasurer Chas Armstrong reported near eight hundred dollars in the bank and discussed room funds for the skating rink. A nominating committee was named for January officers.

Work On New Rooms At Orono Rink

Construction begins this week on two more rooms at the Orono Rink. Contractor Floyd Nicholson expects completion in five weeks. The Agricultural Society and Orono Athletic Association fund the project at over $1000 to create a heated refreshment booth for spectators and a fair office on the main floor.

Merry Music Makers Elect 1963 Officers After December Meeting

The Merry Music Makers met December 1 at Mrs. M. H. Staples home with 19 members. Donald McKenzie conducted a program of piano pieces and Christmas carols. New officers for 1963 were Suzanne Bunting president Fred Bunting vice president Marilyn Tamblyn secretary and program convenor Beverley Tennant.

Bowmanville Shamrocks Lead Lakeshore Intermed B League

Keith West tops the scoring race as Bowmanville Shamrocks hold first place with 15 points from five wins and a tie. The top scorers include Keith West 20, J West 15, O Gravelle 14, and other leaders from Picton Uxbridge and Trenton.

Levy Boost Rejected by Ganaraska Region Authority

The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority rejected a levy that would nearly double Port Hope's annual payment of 1400. Three structures based on assessment or population or both were proposed, with most municipalities facing increases. Port Hope resident W. J. Austin said it hits the town hard while secretary Mrs. C. C. Woods noted a needed extra 2200 for higher activities and land purchases.

Orono rink adds heated rooms for extra facilities

Construction plans describe a room and a store room connected to the west stairs of the bleachers. Access will be from stairs on the west. Both rooms ash will be heated from the existing furnace and will extend the Orono rink’s facilities after completion.

Santa Arrives in Orono for Village Visit

Santa Claus comes to the Village this Saturday afternoon to greet district children. He arrives at 2:00 p.m. and tours the town on the Orono Fire Engine with siren. He meets children at the Orono Municipal Building and each child receives a small gift. He returns the following week for Santa’s shop hours 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Saturday in the north office of Partner's home. Sponsored by the Orono Chamber of Commerce.

Death of Adam Henderson Keane in Oshawa

Adam Henderson Keane died at Oshawa General Hospital on Friday December 1 after two years of illness. Born January 5, 1884 in Northern Ireland, he married there on July 1, 1918 and lived in Oshawa ten years, retiring from farming in 1952. Survived by widow Rebecca Hunter and four sons Samuel Oshawa Mervin Bil Toronto John Waterdown Robert Blurton England. three sisters Ruth Wolwram Toronto Annie Stimpson and May Roberts Ireland. one brother George Keane Leaside. nine grandchildren. Newcastle Lions Mark Fifteenth Charter Anniversary

The Newcastle Lions Club observed its fifteenth Charter Anniversary at the Lions Centre in Bowmanville with members and guests from Newcastle district and Whitby to Norwood. A turkey dinner for 150 preceded a guest talk by Rev. Richard D. Jones on preserving the Christmas spirit and improving human relationships, urging sacrifice and brotherhood throughout the year.

The Durham County Holstein Club held its Annual Banquet in Black Stock on Friday December 7 with a dinner by the United Church ladies. Rickard Advocates Debate on Eastern Agriculture Policy

Garnet Rickard, Progressive Conservative candidate for Durham, said he is willing to debate Liberal MP Russell Honey on agriculture anytime and anywhere. He rebutted Honey’s eastern Canada critique with figures from the Ontario Department of Agriculture, arguing that net returns and costs favor dairy and mixed farming, and urged government cooperation with farm groups.

HiC Hop For New Years Eve

Orono Hi-C plans festive season events with a Sunday carol sing at 7 p.m. in the church and a Monday gathering at 7 p.m. for calendar distribution. The gala Hi-C Hop will be at Odd Fellows Hall with prizes and balloons followed by a candle service and buffet in the Sunday School Auditorium. Forest Hill Band To Entertain At Clarke High School

The Forest Hill Collegiate Band about eighty musicians will join Clarke High School Glee Club and a Forest Hill String Ensemble to perform tonight at Clarke School auditorium. The program begins at eight o clock with twenty five cent admission and invites all to attend. The concert features over one hundred students from both schools.
