Clarke Township Elects Woodyard Deputy Reeve Jones and Hawke Win

About half of Clarke Township voters participated in the municipal election. E R Woodyard won reeveship, Melville Jones defeated Lovekin for deputy reeve, Hartwell Lowery and Art McKay were re elected councillors with Wilfred Hawke also chosen, Laverne Hoy defeated. The council will focus on road work and taxation concerns. Traversed polls show Woodyard and Jones carrying key districts as roads and finance dominate the race.

Oddfellows Dance and Draw at Orono Town Hall

The Oddfellows Service Club hosts a charity dance and draw at Orono Town Hall on Wednesday December 12 with Merriam's Orchestra from Cobourg. Tickets sell at local shops. prizes include five dressed turkeys five geese two bushels of No 1 McIntosh apples a doll and ten one dollar bills. Admission is 50 cents per person.

Election in Newcastle Returns Four Council Members

Newcastle held its council election on December 3 with eight men contesting and four seats filled. George Walton received acclamation for reeve, while Tracy Manes A W Glenny Stanley Graham and John Rickard were elected. T J Brown M J Gogerty Percy Hare and George Meadows were defeated.

Butter Output Down Ration Likely To Be Cut

A slight drop in butter manufacture and returning soldiers may trigger a cut in butter rations. The Wartime Prices and Trades Board's Food Administration branch studies options, with possible reduction from eight to seven ounces per eight weeks. Domestic consumption may be reduced to meet supply, while shipments abroad rise.

Farmers Debate Ration Controls at Provincial Forums

The Durham County Federation of Agriculture reports forum findings on sugar butter and meat rations with 70 percent want to keep sugar as is 40 percent for butter and 40 percent for meat favor removal, and 80 percent support leaving ceiling prices while floor prices worry farmers.

Formal Opening Of Orono Guides New Hall

Orono celebrated the formal opening of the new Girl Guide Hall, donated by Mr. W. E. Armstrong with furnishings from several groups. Mrs. W. E. Armstrong chaired, Brownie and Guide enrollments were announced, gifts presented to supporters, and a community supper plus an apron sale raised funds for the local association.

Local Holstein Nominated For All-Canadian

Glenafton Pilot owned by John Cruickshank Hampton nominated for the fourth Annual All-Canadian Contest for Holstein cattle. He won first prize three year old bull and Senior Champion at Warkworth Regional Championship Show and first and Grand Champion at the Durham Black and White Day in Orono.

Clarke Township Reeve T A Reid Retires After Long Service

W J Riddell Presented With 25 year Jewel after fifteen years in Clarke Township Council. Reeve for nine years retires from municipal affairs. during tenure township cleared of debt and tax rate fell from nine mills to four. His efforts will be greatly missed at County Council.

Dorothy Stapleton and Denny Lynch Win Gold Medals

Dorothy Stapleton of Newtonville and Denny Lynch of Orono won gold medals at a WC T U Gold Medal Contest held November 30 in Park Street United Church Sunday School room. Six contestants received books. prizes were presented by Mrs SH Walsh and Rev Littlewood gave a temperance address.
