Bowmanville Urges District Help For New Hospital

The Bowmanville hospital now houses 25 to 35 in 22 beds, overcrowded from district patients. Bowmanville voters approved 100000 for a 50 bed hospital costing about 200000, to serve local and adjoining districts. The notice requests surrounding districts pay minimum shares, with 12000 from Darlington, 8000 Clarke and Orono, 2500 Newcastle, 1000 Cartwright, plus 76500 by subscription, to secure construction. Dr. Wm Tennant chairs.

Diphtheria Vaccination Dates Stated for Darlington District Schools

Health unit announces inoculation schedule for Darlington and Clarke Township schools on December 18 and 19 1945 with second and third doses scheduled six weeks apart. Pre school children invited with reinforcing doses urged for those toxoid over three years. Whooping cough vaccine also offered.

Wo mans Missionary Society Holds December Meeting 1945

The Wo mans Missionary Society met December 1 after the W A session. Mrs Staples presided and announced 1946 officers led by President Mrs M H Staples. Reports were given on the nominating committee and Missionary Monthly. The group discussed sending Japanese back to Japan and studied Africa with Angola as focal work.

Bowmanville Defeats Orono 17 to 4

The Bowmanville boys beat Orono 17 to 4 in the first game of basketball sponsored by the Orono Athletic Association at the local armouries. Crono credited with both baskets for Bowmanville, while Cornish and L. Boyd scored for Orono. The game showcased rapid passing and solid defense, with plans for practice and new sweaters to help distinguish players.

Canadian farm income falls by sixty two million in first half

Ottawa reports a 62 million drop in Canadian farm income for the first six months of 1945 versus 1944. Cash income totaled 702 million, with Saskatchewan leading declines at 51 million, Alberta 25 million, Manitoba 14 million, while Ontario rose about 23 million helped by cattle and calf markets, crops and dairy sales.

Oddfellows Service Club Draws Winners at Town Hall Dance

The Oddfellows Service Club held a successful dance at Town Hall with Alex Merriam’s Orchestra of Cobourg. Prize winners included Charles Stapleton Orono and Ernest Dent Orono for turkeys and geese among others. The doll Miss Betty went to Mrs John Armstrong Orono. Net receipts near 421.70 dollars.

Clarke Township Council met in Orono on Tuesday December 4 with all members present. Resolutions covered relief, Bowmanville Hospital publicity, tax and school debentures, police levy, road leave, snowplow use, and year end bills. Salvage Drive In Orono Ends With Community Drive

On Saturday December 15th the Orono Boy Scouts hold a salvage collection drive asking for paper rags and old mattresses. The event invites residents to place items at the curb for truck pickup and notes the date clearly. A separate report details a burglary at Armstrong's General Store where men’s suits hats scarves boots and cigarettes were stolen. Police investigated the break in which occurred early Tuesday morning December 12th and used pry bar tools that could erase fingerprints. Items from the prior day’s sales and two pair of shoes remain as clues. Authorities believe the thieves acted for money left from previous sales and continue to search for suspects including local police and Gordon Watson’s service station.

Divorces and War Marriages Highlight Cobourg Court

Four divorce actions and one suit to set aside an agreement opened in Cobourg Supreme Court before Justice Wilson on December 10. Decree nisi granted in all four divorce cases with war marriage servicemen as plaintiffs. In three cases wives testified for husbands. New sheriff Fred C Richardson presided. Stanton vs Wicks was carried to next sittings.

Change In Real Estate Letter Found In Barn Dirt

While tearing down C H Froste’s newly bought property a message from December 1958 was found nailed to a board. Gilespie Moffatt & Co. wrote to a Newcastle recipient acknowledging receipt of 100.63 for an account placed in collection. The legible letter shows older handwriting and good penmanship.

Carlos Tamblyn Re-Elected President Holstein Club

Carlos Tamblyn of Orono was re elected as 1946 President of the Durham County Holstein Club at the Annual Meeting and Goose Dinner on December 5. The event featured certificates and high lactation totals for cows Belle Fayne Korndyke Lass Mina Fayne Korndyke Cedar Dale Rag Apple lossy and Cedar Dale Eva Lestranize. Judge H S Mott spoke on family relationships and R Ray McLaughlin led breed discussions with Ernie Bruce providing bagpipe entertainment.
