Orono Fish and Hunt Club Picnic Notices

The Orono Fish and Hunt Club schedules a picnic at Gore's Landing on August 28 with a fish derby and prizes for children. Members are asked to register at Lunn's Hardware for attendance and car pooling, bring lunch and cups, and expect pooled refreshments with club supplied tea and drinks.

Newlyweds Honored at Leskard Veteran Event

At Leskard school house a large crowd celebrated two district couples Mr. and Mrs. Bob Keane and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Stobart with music by Howard Linton and Bill Found. Mrs Hartwell Lowery accompanied and Betty Chapman read an affectionate poem about the newlyweds.

Potato Growers Hold Field Day in Cavan and Manvers

A field day for potato growers took place Friday in Cavan and Manvers Townships with about seventy five attendees, including twenty five youth members. Attendees toured multiple local farms observing Katahdin and Chippewa varieties, experimental plots, and spraying trials led by Dr. G H Berkeley, Norman Thompson, and others, hearing market outlook for 1946 and noting DDT’s effectiveness against leaf hopper.

Sugar ration increased to aid housewives and factories

World sugar supplies have improved enough to raise the ration for households, industrial users, and quota holders. Each household will receive an extra three pounds of sugar for the rest of 1946, with two coupons valid in September and the remaining on December 6th. Five coupons in Book No 6 become valid September 19, then two in October and three in November and December. The rise is expected to help home canning as extra sugar can be replaced with September coupons.

Q Coupons Authorized for Meat Purchases

The spare Q coupons in the current ration book will be valid for meat after August 22 when M coupons run out. Coupon M-50, valid starting August 15, is the final bidown coupon in ration book No 5. To cover until book No 6 on September 19, gray spare Qs will be used, first Q-1 on August 22.

Clarke Township Sets 1946 Rate At 8 Mills

Clarke Township Council meets August 6 1946 confirms by laws on 8 mill rate for police village of Orono and township taxes includes county and school rates. Plans revision of 1946 roll for 1947 under Assessment Act and provisions for road closing near Hope Township boundary. Bob Hawke and colleagues pass by laws and schedule adjournment for Sept 8 1946.

Counties Health Unit Busy In The Sanitary Field

At the Cobourg board of health meeting on August 8 1946 Dr G W Miller said July was busy for the Health Unit focusing on safe milk and water supplies. Testing of milk samples and inspections of tourist facilities were reported along with 69 resident requests to eliminate insanitary conditions and a few housing closures.

Cost of Living Increases Highlight Delicate Balance

Dominion Bureau of Statistics reports a 1.5 point rise in the cost of living index from June to July, moving from 122.6 to 124.1. Prices boost mainly from vegetable seasonal gains and clothing plus home furnishings, with government stabilization policies urging restraint and shared responsibility to avoid a new inflation cycle. Donald Gordon of the Prices Board warns that power abuses by groups could trigger sharper, cumulative price hikes unless all sectors cooperate.

Hockey Club To Raise Funds For Rink Improvement

Orono Hockey Club will host a series of dances at Willows Pavilion donated by Mr. R R Waddell to fund rink upgrades for the next season. The first dance stars Shirley Edwards and her 12 piece orchestra, touted as Canada’s top teenage orchestra, with CHUM contract in the fall and winter season. They’ve performed for Christie Street veterans British War Brides and many teenage clubs in Toronto.
