Orono Couple Honoured With Welcome Home Presentation

In Orono on August 14 1946 a large gathering at the Armouries honoured Mr and Mrs George Mitchell newly joined after his wartime marriage to an English bride. A chair and table lazy boy set were presented with a warm address and dancing followed the formal presentation.

Wartime Prices Board Maintains Rent Controls

The Wartime Prices and Trade Board states rent control will remain in force for tenants and business premises. New rules allow six months notice to vacate for shared accommodation, ending anytime. A commercial lease under Order 583 may include tenant termination at a set time with agreed notice.

Milk subsidy cut may raise milk price in October

Victor Meek of the Ontario Milk Control Board predicts a three cent per quart rise in whole milk prices on October 1 unless the government continues the 55 cent per hundredweight subsidy to producers. Agriculture Minister James Gardiner says a final decision is not yet reached and discussions continue between the two authorities.

Nine Month Nursing Assistant Course Opens in Ontario

Starting September 16 1946 the Ontario government offers a nine month program for Nursing Assistants. Three months in a central school six months supervised hospital practice leading to a Certified Nursing Assistant certificate. Applicants need interest in nursing good health references Grade X education age 18 to 40. Sixty dollars monthly maintenance covered plus transportation for Ontario residents. Certificate awarded after exams with employment prospects. Applications through local hospital superintendent or Nurse Registration Branch Toronto.

Abolition of Grade 3 Peaches In Ontario Policy Shift

At Queen's Park Ontario officials announce ending Grade 3 peaches under The Farm Products Grades and Sales Act on recommendation of the Ontario and Niagara Peninsula Fruit Growers Association. George Wilson cites Grade 3 as a menace to quality sales and introduces a Domestic Split Grade for large ripe fruit with No 1 size and domestic quality.

Orono Women’s Institute Plans Fall Fair Display

At the Orono Women’s Institute meeting last Friday the Home Economics Committee led by Mrs. H. Allen organized the program. She spoke on vegetables and showed canning methods and their role in a balanced diet. Mrs. Allen demonstrated a salad for a shut-in. Kathleen Chapman sang Alice Blue Gown with accompaniment. The roll call noted a new vegetable dish and how to cook it. A lunch was served and the National Anthem sung. Excerpts from Federated News were read by the Publicity committee.

No Infantile Paralysis Reported In Northumberland Durham Unit

No infantile paralysis cases recorded in the Northumberland Durham Health Unit area up to August 12. Cases have occurred elsewhere in Ontario and across Canada. Public measures stress general health and include food protection from flies, fly proof toilets, covered garbage, washing fruit and vegetables, boiling dishes, avoiding polluted waters, limiting exertion, and ensuring rest and reduced crowds.

Woman's Christian Temperance Union Meets at Park Street

The W C T U met Tuesday August 20 at Park Street United Church with President Mrs Walsh in charge. The session opened with a hymn and devotional from Mrs Delve. A Peace Secretary report announced the Provincial Convention set for September 24 to 26 in Brantford.

September Meeting Set With Salina Speaker Visit

The convenor notes the Fair next month prompts the September gathering to be held on the 18th. A special speaker, Mrs. H. E. Werry of Salina, president of the West Durham District Women’s Institutes, will address attendees.

Girl Guides Return From Camp At Bonecho Point

On August 6 thirty Girl Guides and their Guiders left for camp at Pigeon Lake seven miles east of Bobcaygeon. The Bowmanville Orono Westleton Blackstock groups attended with fourteen from Bowmanville and others from Orono and Nestleton. Camp featured a screened kitchen a rock filled site and wind delays for fires. Pets and wildlife challenged activities and a mock funeral and Indian dance entertained. The group named the point Bonecho Point and returned home after ten days under fine weather.

Salvation Army reports 3 million social outlay in Canada

The Salvation Army’s 68th annual balance sheet shows social service outlays totaling 2 936 730.98 in Canada last year with a 964 500.93 net gap covered by the 1944 Home Front Appeal. Grants aid funded 300 centers and 52 institutions, plus rehabilitation and youth programs. next year’s drive seeks 2 000 000 for maintenance and expansion.
