Record Crowd Attends Orono Park Sports Day
A large crowd attended the annual Sports Day at Orono Park on Monday afternoon under clear skies after morning showers. Twelve swimming races featured boys and girls with prizes of chocolates. Hans Bosgraaf led boys with three wins. An Orono girls softball match was canceled due to no opponent. later Orono lost to Bolahood’s Softball of Oshawa.

Death of William Crowther 1956 Newcastle community leader
William George Crowther dies suddenly on Thursday July 26 1956 in Newcastle in his 51st year. He is survived by wife Hilda Hazel Wood two sons Charles Robert and James Edward his mother Mrs Walter Crowther and brother Robert Charles of Toronto. Crowther organized the Newcastle Ladies Softball Club in 1931 and led it for nineteen years. He was Past Master of Durham Lodge A F and A M served as lodge chaplain and active on the Blood Donor Committee and was president of Ontario Districts Past Masters Worshipful Masters and Wardens Association. He was Rector's Warden at St George's Anglican Church and was honoured at his funeral and graveside in Bond Head under Masonic auspices. Pallbearers listed. large floral tributes noted from many local groups.
