Orono School Board Rents Anglican Hall For Temporary Class

The Orono Public School Board plans an addition and a temporary classroom in St. Sayour’s Anglican Church to house a fourth class until construction finishes. A fifteen mill levy and a $10,000 Department grant support washrooms, a nurse’s room, and a teacher’s office as work progresses.

Committees Prepare for 43rd International Plowing Match

Ontario committees work for Brooklin October 9 to 12 as 200 tractors are needed and space services tents parking and accommodations must be arranged for hundreds of contestants and thousands of visitors during the four day event.

The Counties completed paving from the Development Road into Mill Street intersection entering Orono. Police Trustees backed widening Cob Hill area for a walking strip funded entirely by the Counties with potential future walk construction if unsatisfactory.

Mrs Carscadden Hosts Visitor and News of Mrs Blake Alexander

Rev. Mr. Pike and Mrs. F. Stoker visited Mrs. T. J. Carscadden on Thursday afternoon. The note says Mrs. Blake Alexander is ill but improving and that Mrs. George Clark and Miss Mary Taylor of Toronto are staying with her during illness.

Orono Edges Roses To Tie Series In Baseball Playoff

Orono Intermediate Baseball won 4 2 over Bowmanville on Wednesday to even the best of three series at one game each. Don Mallet pitched six and a third innings, striking out nine as Orono had eight hits to Bowmanville's two. Final game set in Orono on Civic Holiday at 2 30 p.m. with Don Mercer scoring both Orono runs in the late frames.

Death of J. J. Wesley Stringer in Orono

J J Wesley Stringer died at Orono on July 28 1956 in his eighty sixth year after nine months of poor health. Born Belleville he moved to Hermon and farmed thirty five years in Crooked Creek. Survived by son Wester daughter Mary Elizabeth and sister Elizabeth Edwards and brother Brownly Stringer. Funeral July 11 1956 at Morris Chapel Bowmanville conducted by Rev Pike. Interment Hermon Cemetery.

Orono Leads In Softball Semi Final Series

Orono holds 2 1 edge over Newcastle in the girls softball semi finals with a 10 7 win in Orono led by pitcher E Bonathan while E Tennant took the loss. An upcoming Sports Day at Orono Park on Civic Holiday August 6 features baseball and softball with a 2 30 pm start between Bowmanville and Orono.

District Fishermen Compensated Over RAF Firing Range Waters

Three years of effort by five Durham County commercial fishermen ended with full compensation for losses caused by an RAF firing range two miles off shore. Payment was made in the presence of officials and local MPs, with two of the Port Hope men accepting compensation in kind and later limits on fishing areas, while one fisherman chose full compensation and retirement from the fishery.
