Orono Swimmers Pass Red Cross Swim Tests

Orono pool hosted Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety tests on July 26 and 27 as part of a month long program sponsored by the Orono Red Cross Society. 140 children completed the lessons with high attendance. tests covered Beginners Junior and Intermediate levels plus five Bronze Medallion candidates on July 29.

Durham Land Judging Contest Highlights 1961 Tour

Conservation authorities sponsor the 1961 Durham Land Judging Competition held July 27 with 28 participants from 4 H clubs and farms. Morning farm tour started at Garnet Rickard's Bow Manville, then soil experts explained profiles and uses. Afternoon contest on Sam Turner farm Bowmanville. junior winner Bill Clan Millbrook with Lynn Brown Newcastle second. Senior winner Don Winslow Ida with Don Welsh Bowmanville runner-up. Special prize of twenty five dollars went to Bill Olan. NES Aids Tobacco Growers in Labour Recruitment

Officials of the National Employment Service pledged maximum help to United Counties tobacco growers for harvest labor. They urged farmers to cooperate by expediting their labour demands. Alex Ouimet and George Kidd spoke of targeted measures in Cobourg Port Hope and Oshawa with NES offices.

Orono Drama Festival Plans Stage Play Purple Door Knob

Orono will take part in the Orono Drama Festival on September 28 29 and 30. The 1930 comedy Purple Door Knob directed by Mr Les.Aslett features three women Maur een Johnson Margaret Powell and Gladys Aslett as the cast.

Tobacco Production in Durham and Northumberland Grows

A report by C N Heath shows Durham 1960 tobacco output of 4 402 467 pounds from 67 farms and Northumberland 3 741 246 pounds from 57 farms. Northumberland leads in pounds per acre and value per acre, with Durham close behind. In 1961 Durham projects 75 farms and 3595 12 acres, while Northumberland has 69 farms and 2790 04 acres.

Tobacco Growers View Experimental Plot in Clarke Two

United Counties tobacco growers attended a Clarke Township meeting at W. J. Adams farm to view a Delhi experimental plot. Officials described Yellow Gold and Delhi 61 varieties, with notes on root rot management and preseason fumigation.

Curvply Wood Products Ltd. began a building addition on Cobbledick Street this week to house nesting chair assembly and equipment including a tube bender riveter welder and related tools. The firm has previously moulded chair seats and backs since arriving in Orono and will now complete full chair assembly in the enlarged facility.

Orono Intermediates Defeat Newcastle At Orono Park

Orono Intermediate baseball team edged Newcastle 4 to 3 at Orono Park with Keith West earning the win on the mound. Don Mercer and Eric Carleton sparked the offense as Orono rallied in the seventh, while Newcastle had unearned runs in the first and fifth. Directors noted membership at Orono District Credit Union reached 125 with 38 borrowers. The Durham Central Agricultural Society planned the Orono fair September 7 to 9 with Go-carts racing and a Tobacco Queen, plus extensive exhibits and a two day program.

Oshawa East Harbor Wharf Contract Awarded

The Department of Public Works awarded Ontario Marine and Dredging Ltd of Toronto a 415 548 70 contract for an east harbor reinforced concrete wharf in Oshawa. The 500 by 56 foot structure includes pile caps reinforced concrete deck steel pipe piles and a steel curtain wall with dredging nearby.

Orono Pool Sets Adult Swim Twice Weekly

Orono Memorial Park Board approved two one hour adult swim blocks at the Orono pool on Tuesday and Friday from eight to nine pm for ages eighteen and over with lifeguards on duty. August hours extend the pool schedule, and board members reviewed finances including a $500 contract balance, $380 pool fund balance, $1,553.60 in August receipts, and $1,139.75 net after salaries.
