Gala Fair on Orono Main Street Draws Crowd

Orono’s fourth annual Chamber of Commerce street fair returns Wednesday August 16 on Main Street. Fun Land opens at 3 PM with rides including Ferris wheel and merry go round, plus games, bingo, and a performance by George Wade and the Corn Huskers. Admission is 25 cents for dancing and events under the stars with a grand prize 20th Century Travel Trailer drawing near 11 PM.

G B Rickard Tops Field in Durham Crop Contest

The Durham Central Agricultural Society held a field crop competition judged by J Baker of Hampton with 18 entries. Prize money totaling 150 dollars will be paid to the first 12, listing winners from G B Rickard with 95 down to Ernest L Gillbank at 83.

Paving Underway on County Road 9 East of Kendal

Paving work continues on County Road 9 between Kendal and Garden Hill with completion expected in about two weeks. Brennan Paving handles the project as part of a development road agreement with the Ontario Department of Highways and United Counties.

Orono Chamber Plans Street Fair and Center for Orono

Fourteen members met at Ontario Trading Post to finalize the annual Street Fair and Chamber business. A new illuminated south village sign and plans for individual letters to advertise events were discussed. A Medical Centre funded by a bequest was announced, with space for a dentist and optometrist, and the Chamber debated Main Street commercial centralization.

Bowmanville Man Killed In Crossing Collision

A Bowmanville farmworker, Blake Short aged 63 of 102 Seugog Street, was killed Tuesday when his 1958 car collided with a CNR freight train at the Stintson Avenue level crossing with no signals. The Montreal to Toronto bound train struck a front left corner as Short was turning south from a field. He had lived in Bowmanville 40 years and survived by his wife Birdie Burke and five children.

William Watson Helps Judge Horses at Brighton Fair

Orono resident William Watson served as a horse judge at the Brighton annual Fair where a large turnout of horses and spectators was reported along with sizeable crowds observing the events.

Shower for Bride to Be in Orono

A miscellaneous shower was held for Miss Shirley Vage bride to be daughter of Mr and Mrs F Vageg in the Oddfellow s Hall Orono on Thursday evening August 3rd. About fifty friends and relatives attended. Hosts Mrs Emma Luann Mrs Bernice Wood Mrs Gloria Adams and Mrs Joyce Cowan served lunch.

Local Horsemen At Brighton Fair

Local horsemen attended the Brighton Fair on Saturday and returned with a goodly portion of the purse. Harold Hooey driving Gus Scott took a first and second in two heats while Gerald Robinson with Mighty Renown won top position in both heats. William Reid led the road races, earning a first for the team event.

Perpetual Hereford Trophy Highlight At Orono Fair

Orono Fair plans a prominent cattle show with new additions. A perpetual Hereford trophy, donated by Milton Cornish in memory of Dr. Lancely Cornish, will be awarded to the exhibitor with the best Hereford herd. The event includes Shorthorns, Angus, Hereford, and Commercial classes, plus a Friday Black and White Show and a new Big 4 Guernsey class on Saturday.

Horse Show Foreshadows Big Attractions at Orono Fair

The Orono Fair features a major horse show with revisions to improve turnout across heavy light and pony classes. Clydes Cherons Belgian Commercial and two and four horse teams compete with a $100 stake for heavy and light horses. Grandstand displays include carriage and roadster teams and singles. Pony and saddle classes expand with prize money to attract exhibitors. The event occurs Saturday afternoon as the two day fair concludes.

The 1961 prize list for the Durham Central Fair Domestic Science division promotes many entries and prizes. Grand Champion Cake and Pie win $5.00, Reserve Grand Champion $3.00, Bread and Rolls $10.00, with refrigeration provided by Orono Electric. Entries due by 12 oclock noon Thursday September 7.

Pitchers Duel Wins Port Hope In Playdown Game

Port Hope edged Orono 2 1 in seven innings at Port Hope as John Shetler's throw to short on a first and third situation produced the winning run. Mike Harrison allowed four hits with five strikeouts for Port Hope while Stone struck out seven on three hits for Orono in a classic duel. The fourth game of the series was set for Orono Park at 6 15 PM.

Pow Wow at Orono Park Focuses on Indian Day

Orono hosts an Indian Day at the playground Friday organized by Playground Supervisor Miss Mary Lynn Bailey. Children will learn to craft headdresses and costumes with prizes for best outfits. A prior hike and marshmallow roast for 22 kids occurred Tuesday at Wilmot Creek.

New Era Begins Public School Opens in Kendal Area

Clarke Township consolidates three local schools into a single new two room building in Kendal serving Sixth Line Kendal and McLean areas. The project cost 49000 dollars with completion expected by August 20 for September operation. Principal Mr McMann and Teacher Miss Marie Kent will staff the school, enrolling 50 to 60 pupils this year.
