Friday Play Day at Orono Pool Ends Summer Session

The Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program at the Orono Pool wraps up for the year with a Friday wind up. Activities start at 10 a.m. and run to about 1 p.m. featuring races and novelty events for all age groups with prizes.

First entrant named for Grand National sports car meet at Mosport

Gerry Browmout of Buffalo becomes the initial entrant for the Grand National sports car races at Mosport Park on August 5. Other Toronto and Montreal drivers join as entries in the Grand Valley Car Club event, part of the 1961 Canadian Racing Drivers Association championship.

Orono Trustees Engage Hydro for Water System Operation

Orono Police Trustees met in the Municipal Building to discuss policy for the southern village water system. The Orono Hydro cleanly sought to manage operate and bill the service under the Local Improvement Act while awaiting final cost estimates and a winter grant decision. Residents requested connections to the system with feasibility reviews for expansion. The board advised written applications for service and noted highway department comments on a directional sign. Local parking, speeding, and road grass maintenance were also discussed with recommendations to involve the Provincial Police if speeding persists.

Orono Band Delights Park Audience Sunday Concert

The Orono Band led by Milton J. Tamblyn performed at Orono Park under the shelter. The Orono Memorial Park Board promoted the event drawing residents and visitors. The program spanned waltzes marches overtures and popular tunes with the martialaires receiving strong applause from about eighteen musicians on site.

Grand National race offers trip for champion drivers

Red Cross Swim Tests Underway At Orono Pool

Red Cross testing this week at the Orono Swimming Pool includes Beginners being tested by Mrs Baxter today and Juniors next year. Thursday will see Juniors Intermediates and Seniors tested on swimming and life saving. Saturday is bronze medal testing with many competitors. Results will appear next week.

Lycett Resigns From Durham High School Board

Durham District High School Board met July 19 in Millbrook with Reg Faillis presiding in the chair. Fred Lycett of Orono resigned for health reasons. the board wished him a speedy recovery. Board approved accounts totaling 13 388 and outlined school boundaries for Port Hope, Millbrook, Bowmanville, Courtice, and the Clarke School opening. Plans were discussed for vocational teacher recruitment and salaries for September 1962. Courtice High School opening planned for late September or early October.

Opening of 28 mile section of Highway 401 near Port Hope

Spectators, MPs, and ministers gathered as the 28 mile stretch of Highway 401 from Port Hope to Brighton opened. Aerial and motorcade arrivals, loud speeches, and impatient motorists marked the ceremony. The $12,000,000 link connects Windsor to the Quebec border, with Cass, Goodfellow, Carruthers, Thompson, and Wladyka among speakers.

First judging of Junior Gardeners projects in Orono and Newcastle

The initial judging of gardens by Junior Gardener's Club members occurred on Tuesday evening July 18. Bowmanville Kiwanis judges Chas Bickle Cranston Scott Jack Morton Ross Jackman and John Ingratta evaluated more than twenty gardens with help from Mrs Fair brother Mrs Schmid and Mr Caldwell. Most gardens were well kept and the children showed strong effort. Final judging will occur in August with prizes: 1st $3 and Bowmenville Kiwanis Trophy 2nd $2 and Diploma 3rd $1 and Diploma awarded at the September meeting.

McGill Bakery changes hands in Orono

The McGill Bakery in Orono will change ownership on Monday July 31 after eight and a half years under A. McGill. Hank van den Brink of Whitby will purchase the business bringing thirty years of baking experience. Pastry baker Pigott and delivery helper Bruce Myles will remain. the van den Brink family will relocate with their three daughters.

Hydro Display at Orono Fair Overseen by Commission

A Monday meeting approved participation with Bowmanville rural office to sponsor a hydro display at the Orono Fair in early September. E Dent to coordinate with Bowmanville on the display highlighting hydro uses at home. The meeting also reported larger transformers at Curvply Wood and rewiring work on Main Street South.

Annexation Talks Move Forward With Hope and Hamilton

Mayor Mich ael Wladyka outlined a September first reading of the annexation by law to add parts of Hope and Hamilton townships.
