Orono Players under Margot Samuel present a three act comedy at Orono Town Hall on Friday and Saturday May 8 and 9. Close to twenty local artists rehearse four nights weekly in the home of Grand Pa Vanderwoff with Arnold Wallace in the role. The ensemble features the Sycamore family and a larger cast including Mary Rutherford Essie Kay Guster Paul Sycamore John Ford Rheba Maureen Johnson and more. Tickets in advance are urged for what organizers call an outstanding local event.

Hea ther Rebekah Lodge No. 334 met Tuesday April 14 with good attendance. District Deputy Luella Kennedy from Port Perry visited and was welcomed. Members discussed ill and bereaved visits, district meeting report, semi annual membership 11 brothers 84 sisters, donations, invitations to Oshawa Lodge birthday and Barrie Home Open House, and plans for a May 2 banquet. Birthday songs honored Youngman Hooey Bradshaw.

Fire Threat Foregone as Firefighters Quell Back Lot Blaze
Last Thursday shortly after one o'clock the fire siren called the local department. Crates behind Armstrongs IGA and near Rolphs Hardware caught fire. The siding on Rolphs began to burn but booster water suppression stopped the flames. The blaze started from a rubbish burn behind the IGA.

Cost of Operating Rink Rises For Orono ACA Meet
At an executive meeting of the Orono Amateur Athletic Association last Wednesday the total cost of operating the rink was reported to rise this year. Expenditures include increased rent 350.00 heating 242.93 rights 165.70 and wages 736.88. Revenue to date 675.24 plus 325.24 gate receipts and 350.00 paid by the skating club. Pending receipts from Public and High Schools will add income. The rink is expected to be in the red this year but relief may come next year if operations continue. Plans were laid for a May play and for forming minor baseball teams in Orono.

Train Derailment Near Newcastle On CPR Line
A freight train derailed near Newcastle on the CPR line Tuesday morning wrecking sixteen cars. A broken wheel blamed for the incident at about 11 30. No injuries reported though cars piled up and communications lines were knocked out. Heavy cranes and crews cleared the track while traffic on Highway 115 backed up.

The Orono High School report notes an over crowded classroom with 46 current students. Projected Grade 9 enrolment in September 1959 could reach 54 or 55 with repeaters, while other areas report attendance near 91 to 95 percent amid flu.

Tractor tumble near Orono ends with bruises
Mr Al Heard of north of Orono toppled from a tractor while discing a field on Mr A Bullocks farm. The out of control tractor passed three fences before being stopped by a fourth on the Counties Development road. He escaped serious injury with only minor bruises.

The Orono Horticultural Society held a successful meeting at the Oddfellow's Hall with 125 attendees. John Clark presented and narrated a slide show of flowers, Rockies, the Grand Canyon, and birds, followed by musical numbers and a social hour after lunch.

Burnside Appointed Assistant Agricultural Rep for Twin Counties
Hon. W. A. Goodfellow announced Edward B. Burnside of Madoc is named Assistant Agricultural Representative for Northumberland and Durham. He will base at Brighton with equal time in both counties, as a new central service centre opens to aid farmers from Oshawa to Kingston. Burnside previously served as Student Assistant in Durham County.

40 Boys Ready For Ball Season
On Wednesday evening over forty area boys registered to play baseball this season. The PeeWee group had twenty five players and Bantams about fifteen. PeeWees are thirteen and under, Bantams fifteen as of May 1. Coaches are in place but none volunteered during the meeting. The Athletic Association plans PeeWee and Bantam teams in the Minor Lakeshore league this year and may add a Junior team if older boys join and a coach is found.

Miss Orono to Be Chosen at Hi-Teen Dance in June
Orono Hi-Teens sponsor the Miss Orono contest with a dance at Town Hall to crown a Queen. Contestants must be 16 or older, residents of Orono, current or former Orono High School students, and have a manager. A $25 prize is funded by the Orono Chamber of Commerce. Three semi finalists will be chosen at a pre June dance and will compete in the final event wearing gowns.

School Trustees Set Contract For Fifth Room
The Orono Public School Trustees awarded a $2900 contract to Mr. James Ard to renovate the north-west basement room into a fifth classroom. Work during the holidays includes new ceiling, floor, plywood panels, cupboards, and a fire exit to the north. A stair to the furnace and storerooms will be built from the main floor starting under the current High School stairs.
