On Tuesday evening April 19 the Brownies and Guides held their Annual Enrolment meeting with parents present. Nine new Brownies were enrolled by Betty Chatterton and Doreen White, and Heather Rutherford, Shirley Duncan, June Heron joined the Guides. Mr Tolmie spoke on birds and animals, and Marlene Graham and Mrs Linton addressed the gathering. A piano solo by Joan Allen and a lunch followed as guests departed.

Air Cadet Week Promoted Across Canada By League
The Air Cadet League of Canada will observe national Air Cadet Week from April 24 to 30. About 270 squadrons nationwide will hold parades open houses and other events inviting public attendance. The pledge calls for public support as nearly 100 000 boys have received Air Cadet training since 1941 with many attending camps flying training and scholarships totaling over 50 000 dollars.

The Oshawa Presbytery Woman’s Association held its eighth annual meeting at St. Paul’s United Church Ajax on April 19 with large attendance. Women from Orono Kirby and Leskard attended the sessions. Mrs W C Sturtridge president of Dominion Council spoke on New Trends in W A Work and installed new officers for 1955 56 including Mrs M J Tamblyn as President and Miss E Penfound as Corresponding Secretary. Four former presidents received life membership certificates and pins.

Orono Enters South Durham Baseball League Again
Orono re joins the South Durham League after last year’s championship. The Port Hope meeting adds eight teams including Newcastle Kendal Welcome Port Hope Cambourne Garden Hill and Newtonville. A second meeting will set the schedule likely starting May 24 with William Mercer elected president and Finnie as secretary.

Pilot Killed as Air Crash Near Newcastle Farm
Farner Bill Kozynski narrowly escaped when a single engine plane passed within fifty feet of him while chopping wood on his farm two miles east of Newcastle. The Wilmette pilot Thomas R. Bayne died when the craft crashed 50 yards from Kozynski, tearing the field and exploding but not burning. Mrs Grant called for help after seeing the crash 200 yards away.

Netonville Residents Injured in Auto Crash
Four or five persons were injured in a Highway 401 collision near Bowmanville Friday night. Jay Trull 61 of Bowmanville driver of the entering car sustained minor chest injuries and his wife facial injuries. G Ross Metcalf 20 Newtonville driver of the other car had minor injuries while Ariel Langstaff suffered minor knee and shoulder lacerations. Passengers were treated at Bowmanville Hospital by Dr. Chas. Austin.

Obituary of Robert James McRoberts
The late Robert James McRoberts died March 26 after a life on Ontario farms from Manvers Township to Reach Township and Orono. He outlived by his widow and three daughters Mrs Carscadden Mary Mrs Gay Hazel and Mrs Geach Elia and nine grandchildren. He left a sister Mrs Alec Beveridge and brothers George and Hugh with three persons and a sister predeceased him.

A two day baseball instruction school is sponsored by the Lakeshore Minor Baseball Association in Newcastle Public School on Friday May 6 and Saturday May 7. The program aims to teach game ins and outs for umpires coaches players and spectators.

Public Mischief Charge Said Against William Jackson
William Jackson 21 of Kendal was arrested on a public mischief charge after a Bowmanville OPP investigation into an attempted shooting report. He was released on $2000 bail and appeared in magistrate court after telling police of a threatening letter following five shots into his late model car on Clarke Township’s Brimacombe Hill. Cpl Gordon Keast noted Jackson later changed his story. Letters were sent to a handwriting expert in Toronto for analysis.

Highway 401 surveyed to Port Hope boundary
Surveyors have completed a preliminary survey of Highway No. 401 from Newcastle to the Hope Hamilton Township boundary. Orange stakes mark the four lane route south of Highway No. 2 crossing Toronto Road between Welcome and Port Hope. Stakes line an orchard owned by Doug Fraser, with the road expected to join Highway 28 about 380 feet north of Molson Street. No further Department of Highways details available.

Successful Easter Tea At St Saviours Church

Tree Farm Field Day Planned for Orono Area
The Tree Farm Committee of Lindsay District met April 11 and toured Peterborough and Victoria Counties. Two woodlots owned by Earl Stanfield and Dr. Duncan Graham met Tree Farm standards and will be certified later this year. Delayed Second Polio Vaccine Dose For Ontario Children
Dr. C. M. Horner of the Northumberland Durham Health Unit says the second polio vaccine dose will be postponed to May 9 with a five week interval after the first dose. The first dose reached 3,348 school children in grades 1 and 2 across 32 clinics, with further plans to be guided by the Ontario Department of Health and communicated to schools and newspapers.
