Police Trustees To Inquire About Drainage Problems

The Orono Police Trustees met in regular session with most members present. They discussed a May meeting with Hon. John Foote, planned capacity test for an alleged septic system at the Orono Armouries, and invited Health rep Mr Waters. They reviewed building maintenance, highway work, sidewalk repairs, and a proposed five dollar annual fire protection fee with a one hundred dollar per call charge.

Orono Hydro Debates Underground Wiring For Village

The Orono Hydro Commission voted in favor of underground wiring for future lines though no installations are authorized yet. Church Street South and Park Street to be rebuilt with costs estimated at 700 for overhead and about 2000 for underground. A memorial fund for Robert H Saunders raises 4.80 per month for a year with excess funds aiding hydro engineers scholarship. The 1953 balance sheet shows a net surplus of 3325.50 and a bank balance of 3210.00.

Orono Midget Hardball Team Opens Spring Training

The Orono Midget Baseball team held its first practice of the year with about twelve players from Orono and Kendal area. They plan to compete in the Lakeshore Minor League with Newcastle and Bowmanville centers, buy new equipment, and secure uniforms. A fundraising sticker plan will grant free admission for donors and family, with E H Samuel as team manager.

Orono Senior Baseball Invited to Lakeshore League

Orono Senior Baseball is invited to participate in Lakeshore League this year. A representative from Orono is expected at the next Lakeshore meeting. Bowmanville is seeking to use the local diamond but has no field due to work at Bowmanville High School.

Clarke Township Red Cross Campaign Totals $964.75

The Clarke Township Red Cross Fund Raising drive is complete with $964.75 raised. Of that, $500 was transferred to the National Organization and the remainder goes to the Orono local chapter. Section results include Orono South led by Mrs. A F. McKenzie with $173.25 and Orono North under Mrs. Wm. Armstrong with $823.20.

W C T U Meeting Notes From April Session

The Women's Christian Temperance Union held its April meeting at Mrs. H Walsh's home. The president led with a hymn, Mrs. George Carson gave the devotional on Meditation from Psalm 104, minutes and annual reports were read and adopted, a clip sheet The Dope Peddler was discussed, and the meeting closed with a Mizpah Benediction and a closing hymn.

The members of St Saviour's Church mourn the death of Miss M Armour their W A President in Orono on Tuesday. They extend sincere sympathy to relatives and friends noting her many years of unselfish service and her cheerful leadership in church work.

Mission Band Elects Officers At April Meeting

The Mission Band met Monday afternoon in the Sunday School room for games, a worship service, and readings. Officer elections included Connie Tyrrell as president, Mary Found as vice president, Margery Tyrrell as secretary, Sheila Barraball as treasurer, Heather Rutherford as pianist, Craig Hinds on roll call, Carol Wagg as World Friend Secretary, and Jean Tamblyn, June Heron, Judy Tamblyn, Patsy Jones as group leaders. A Spring Tea is planned for May 14.

Northumberland and Durham Counties Council moves April session to approve a building project not to exceed 400000 for county offices and courts. A site at the Counties Farm near Bowmanville is discussed amid past delays and bar associations opposition.

Rickaby Guest Speaker at Evening Auxiliary Meeting

Mr. J A Rickaby, a Toronto teacher at Sunnyview School, spoke on methods for teaching deaf and hard of hearing children. He discussed causes of deafness, the value of education for such children, and the importance of making them capable citizens.

Urges Need Of New Counties Home For Aged

The Counties Council faced pressure from F. C. Long Deputy Reeve for Port Hope over building a county home for the aged. He warned the council had acted unwisely under threat of a writ and supported a county home as the priority, while a county building could accompany it. The council approved a planned visit to the Whitby Ontario County Home to compare accommodations before deciding on a new home.

Orono Softball Opens Schedule May 18 At Home

The Clarke Darlington Girls softball league adds Bethany and lines up five teams Courtice Newcastle Newtonville Orono Bethany. Orono hosts Newtonville May 18 to open the 1965 schedule as defending champions with a double round and playoffs for top four.
