Orono Receives Per Capita Grant Support From Township

Orono village will gain under a 1955 arrangement with Clarke Township as the council reduces village property taxes by 3.5 to 3.75 mills and adds a 50 cent per person per capita grant from the provincial fund. The overall village benefit is about 350 dollars more than in 1954, with $2350 total for 1955 including hospital allotment.

Durham Junior Farmers Dramatic Festival At Orono

At Orono on March 28 the First Junior Farmer Drama Festival showcased youthful talent. Winning play A Pair of Lunatics by Hope Juniors starred Margaret Aitken and Allin Osborne with adjudicators Mrs Bryant and Miss Jean Cunningham. Best actress was Margaret Aiken and best actor Clifford Bristow received gifts.

Local Family Visits Highlight Weekend Gatherings

Mrs. Carl Tennant spent the weekend with her daughter and family the Coopers of London. Mrs. William Malley stayed with Mrs. Fred Duncan at Pontypool. L. C. Mason and family from Bowmanville visited Ernest Dent's home. Don Duncan attended a convention in Toronto on Tuesday.

Orono Firefighters Tame Grass Fire at Sherwin Home

The Orono Fire Department answered the first call of the year Saturday morning to control a spreading grass fire behind the Robert Sherwin home. The blaze was brought under control with no property damage, aided by water from the department's truck. The village experienced a quiet winter with no recorded fires.

Elizabeth F Moffatt dies at 90 in Oshawa

Elizabeth Frances Hamm Moffatt longtime Oshawa resident died at Oshawa General Hospital on Friday April 8 at age 90 after a brief illness. She was born in Cornwall England September 17 1864 married in Orono Ontario 1886 and was active in King Street United Church Women’s Association and Missionary Society. She leaves two daughters two sons five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. memorial service held April 11 at Armstrong Funeral Home. Interment Oshawa Union Cemetery.

Orono Choir Launches Inspiring Easter Music Program

The Orono Choir and guest artists presented a two hour Easter program at Orono United Church. Vocal solos duets and violin numbers highlighted by Glen Allin Ross Metcalf and Kimi Hambourg impressed the congregation. The group offered two anthems and led hymns delivering a well received performance.

Easter Sunday Service At Orono United Church

The Easter service at Orono United Church on April 10 drew a capacity congregation. The Sacrament of Baptism and twenty new members joined the fellowship. The choir sang The Strife is Oer and Mrs Carson with Mrs Rickaby performed Hosanna.

Building Boom in Orono Township for 1955

Building in the township rises this year with permits from H. E. Millson. Construction expands along the new highway from No. 401 to No. 2 north of Orono village. High permit intake suggests many new buildings in 1955, though village lots limit expansion.

Seven Mill Increase In Darlington Tax Rate

Darlington township council approved a by law to raise the total mill rate by about seven mills this year. The roads levy leads at 10 mills with a major road program and new machinery planned. General township 2 mills, county 7.09, general school 4.26, school debentures 4.45, High School 6.36, fire protection 1 mill, all subject to local school additions.
