Senior division speaking winner at Legion District final

Miss Roma Glanville of He Drone High School won top honour in the senior division of the Royal Canadian Legion District final speaking contest held Saturday morning in Bow Bowmanville. Her speech A Trip to Remember impressed judges L Roberts G Graham and Mrs J O Neill with its imaginative Queen visit theme.

Port Hope Harbour Dredging Contract Awarded

A $31 000 contract for dredging three harbour areas at Port Hope Ont has been awarded to Simcoe Dock and Dredging Limited of Toronto by the Department of Public Works. The low bid beat four others. work to be done by June 30 1961 involves removing 25 000 cubic yards of material to maintain depths of 16 feet at the entrance and inner harbour and west slip and 12 feet at the east slip. Port Hope lies 66 miles east of Toronto. R P Henderson will supervise.

Orono Delegation Highlights Central Ontario Zeep Workshop

Orono was well represented at the Central Ontario Zeep Workshop Conference of the Ormario Recreation Association in ypbellfortion Saturday. Delegates from Orono included Mr. Cles Hutton chairman of the Clavke Township Rec Commission, Mrs. H. H. Barlow and Mrgy Hi Samuel. The conference covered exhibits in stone polishing, needlework, leather craft, mosaics and painting plus workshops on smaller-centre recreation social arts. Bowmanville Drama Workshop presented a one act play and junior visitors surveyed senior citizens in Campbellford, planning for future facilities.

April Meeting of the Woman's Association

The April meeting of the Woman's Association was held on Thursday afternoon April 13. President Mrs. H. Allen chaired and opened with a poem The Promise for Spring. Hymn Count Your Blessings was sung. Devotional by Mrs Wyke with Near My Cross. Scripture reading from John 15 on Lent and Easter that lasts. A poem The Three Gardens and closing prayer followed. Treasurer reported balance 443.75 and net proceeds 133.20 from coop banquet and High School Graduation banquet. Delegates named for the Presbytery meeting at St. Andrew's Oshawa on April 27. Arrangements made to serve luncheon to Bowmanville Choral Society after their Friday performance.

Ben Hur Coming To Royal Bowmanville

The Royal Theatre Bowmanville announces the screening of Ben Hur a $30 million production headed by Charlton Heston and a large cast. The film will run at least eleven performances in July and is billed as a must see spectacle.

Drama Workshop Announces Weekend Conference in Bowmanville

The Drama Workshop hosts an open workshop in Bowmanville on Saturday April 29 and Sunday April 30. Sessions run 9 30 am to 5 00 pm each day with on Saturday acting instruction by Mr Zoder and on Sunday directing by Mr James Dean. The fee for the event is not specified.

The Heather Rebekahs of Orono marked their lodge inception on April 12 with a birthday supper pot luck and entertainment. Mrs Montgomery of Oshawa performed songs on piano while audience participation followed. The group was praised for looks, cooking, fundraising, and community spirit.

Orono Drama Festival committee led by Mrs. Margot Samuel plans a September 28 29 30 event shifting from Fall Fair conflicts to boost attendance. Adjudicator Raya Crashford will judge entries for the Orono Chamber of Commerce trophy plus acting directing and production prizes.

Clarke Township council approves mill rate increases and projects

Clarke Township council held a meeting to set tax mills for various schools and services, approving increases including Orono School, Durham District High, and general township rates. A new 400 foot cement sidewalk project in Kendal was tendered, with bids reviewed amid by law posture, while a proposed second Newcastle subdivision plan moved toward development pending departmental approval.

Tyrrell Drug Store Sold to Bowmanville Couple

Mr and Mrs James H Stutt have purchased the Tyrrell Drug Store in Bowmanville after twenty four years of operation under the former name The couple are Ontario College of Pharmacy graduates with Mr Stutt managing Jury and Lovell Drug in Bowmanville and planning to move to Orono later this year Mrs Stutt continues to operate the Orono store The ownership transfer completed on April 15 The Stutts have two young daughters.
