Fire Destroys H Nixon's Barns and Livestock in Clarke Township

A Saturday night blaze in Clarke Township destroyed three H Nixon barns and 8 head of cattle 40 pigs and equipment. The fire endangered a nearby house but was checked by local firefighters aided by an auxiliary pumper with the home pastor noting possible savings. Estimated loss exceeds 20000 dollars with insurance covering the barns. A grass fire at Twin Oaks Motel caused no damage and burned out under department supervision.

Tribute to Jack Baker of Durham Shorthorn Cattle

More than 150 friends and Shorthorn breeders gathered at Salina Community Hall to honor Jack Baker of Hampton, the first president of the Durham Shorthorn Cattle Association. He received a cane and leather purse, with remarks on his long service and 90 years of Shorthorn cattle on his farm.

Obituary of Charles A Prout of Newcastle

Charles A Prout died at Bowmanville Memorial Hospital on Friday April 7 in his 68th year after failing health. He was born near Bowmanville October 19 1893 and moved to Newcastle 35 years ago to farm then became a community butcher. He served in World War I and belonged to Newcastle United Church. Survived by wife Ethel Rose Gilbank, daughter Jean Logan, sons Glenn and Ross, three sisters and five grandchildren. Funeral at Morris Funeral Home Bowmanville Monday April 10 at 2 p.m. Interment Drone Cemetery conducted by Rev E C Woodland.

Durham County 4-H clubs form and elect officers

Four H clubs in Durham County held a 1961 meeting naming officers for beef sheep poultry dairy calf and new Durham Apple Club leaders. Officers include Don Rickard Bowman-Vv Gray James Rickard and Kathy McHolm among others with Dor da Dalyrymple coordinating. A. O. Dalrymple chaired and May 1 admission planned. Also Heather Rebekah Lodge No 334 met with officers and district visitors present.

Tea And Bake Sale Nets $37.00

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Orono Boy Scouts Association held a successful Bake Sale and Afternoon Tea at the Sunday School Auditorium of Church. Pies cookies tarts and cakes were sold with tea and other refreshments. proceeds totaled 37 dollars for Cub and Scout movement support.

Gans Top Shorthorn Price at Durham County Sale

The Durham County Shorthorn Association sale in Hampton saw thirty head offered with an average price of 312.00. John Rickard of Newcastle paid 725.00 for a polled Shorthorn bull bought by W. Jaynes of Newcastle, the sale top. Garnet Rickard earned 600.00 for another bull bought by the Quinte Cattle Breeders Association. Gloriadale Farms Port Hope led for a polled cow and calf at an undisclosed top price, with Martin Quebec purchasing eight cows at about 280.00 each. overall satisfaction with prices was universal.

Orono Eaters Enter Lakeshore Intermediate League

Orono village forms a Lakeshore Intermediate Baseball League entry with three rivals. E M Mercer and Albert West represented Orono at a Port Hope meeting. Opening game slated for May 22 in Orono against Belleville. Officers named include Ticker Crombie secretary manager Lawrence Hoffman first vice and Arnold Wade as third member to assist with protests.
