District Horticultural Meeting Set for Orono

About forty attendees at the Orono Horticultural Society meeting in Odd Fellows Hall. President John Caldwell announced the district meeting will be held in Orono on June 2. Mrs Fairbrother reported on the Niagara Falls convention with pictures of the falls and tulips in Ottawa. Mrs Raymond Chapman sang a solo. A social hour and lunch concluded the evening.

Orono Park Board Discusses Park Improvements

The Orono Park Board met Monday evening to plan maintenance and improvements for the year. They reviewed prices for an underpass tunnel from the dressing rooms to the pool but have not yet received wading pool costs and will reconvene after pricing.

Dake Appointments To Assist Agriculture

Ontario minister announces transfers and new appointments in the Agricultural Representative Service. A. N. Watson moves from Waterloo to Northumberland at Brampton effective May 1, 1962. J. R. Ingratta to take duties in Durham and Ontario counties from Bowmanville on May 7, 1962.

Grass Fires Reported Near Orono This Week

The Orono Fire Department handled two grass fire calls this week. One near Curply Wood Products along highway 115 was controlled within minutes. The other, Monday at the Armstrong farm sixth line Clarke, burned through about three quarters of the west orchard before residents and farmers helped contain the blaze. The fire started from a brush fire.

Orono Sunday School Group Tours Oshawa Churches

Thirty five Senior High Sunday School students from Orono United Church visited three Oshawa churches on a Sunday afternoon. led by Mrs. R. Gilbert the group toured St George Ukrainian Catholic Church and heard Father Pereyma explain church features. A Smorgasbord dinner followed at the Orono United Church basement before returning home.

Armstrongs IGA Expands Grocery Department

Construction at Armstrongs IGA progresses with extensions to add space for the grocery department. The plan moves the grocery store into the former dry goods area, doubles its size, and shifts dry goods to the north Armstrong location as renovations continue toward a June opening.

Lakeshore Minor Baseball Proposes Younger Age Group

The Lakeshore Minor Baseball Association met in Newcastle on Friday April 18 to elect officers for 1962 and plan the season. New division aims to add an 11 and under age group while PeeWee remains for 13 and under. games start May 19 with a May 4 meeting to finalize entries and the schedule.

United Church Women Hold Leadership Training Session

Mrs. H. A. Mellon chaired the Oshawa Presbytery UCW leadership education program with two days of training for eastern Hampton and western Albert Street units. The theme Learners in His Service guided worship by Mrs. Saywell and sessions on Bible study, conferences, and community outreach. A Bible drama, reports, and a focus on clothing for overseas relief marked the program, with praise for the benefits to participants.

Canadian racer Ludwig Heimrath to race in Pau Grand Prix

Canadian sports car champion Ludwig Heimrath flies to France to drive in the Pau Grand Prix on Easter Monday. He will race in a factory Porsche Formula One car, aiming for a top ten finish and hoping for breaks to outpace Ferraris on the short course.

Orono church fundraiser aims for 75000 building

Orono United Church launches a three year campaign to raise 75000 for a new Christian Educational Building to serve its Sunday School. A banquet at Oddfellow's Hall drew 225 attendees and pledged 10000 from ten canvassers, with no dinner soliciting.
