Orono I O C F marks fiftieth anniversary celebration

Orono Lodge No. 436 celebrated 50 years since charter on April 2 1912 with a turkey banquet in Ye Sunday School Auditorium, the evening including a hall program, speeches by Bro R K Williamson and others, donations to Bowmanville Hospital and church funds, and a large veteran member turnout. The event honored past Grand Masters and noted community service and sick benefits totals.

Orono Camera Club Notes Seasonal Meeting

The Orono Camera Club held a Wednesday meeting with guest speaker J Stutt who urged reading books on photography and building a personal science library. Members shared snow scenes and ice slides by A Dixon and flower closeups by A Low. next meeting moves to April 25 at 8 pm in the Armouries due to the Spring Fashion Show.

Athletic Association to show The Littlest Outlaw at Oddfellows Hall

The athletic association sponsors a film show at Oddfellows Hall on Wednesday afternoon April 25. The Littlest Outlaw, a Walt Disney action drama in Technicolor, stars Andres Velasque and the horse Conquistador. Read more on page eight.

Dr. R P Vivian Praises Conservative Policies in Canada

Durham MP Dr. R P Vivian lauds the Diefenbaker government for five years of policy success. Speaking to about 500 in Orono Town Hall he praises prosperity, calls for continued Conservative support, and defends freedom against Liberal tactics. He urges the party's return to power and touts the Bill of Rights as a Magna Carta.

Grass Fire Burns Seventy-Five Acres West of Village

Last Thursday a grass fire west of the Village consumed seventy five acres on land owned by the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests. It started on a neighboring farm and, aided by a brisk breeze, spread to the Orono Forestry property. The Clarke Union School House was at risk as children were sent to a long noon hour. Forestry crews and Orono Fire Department fought the blaze for about an hour, destroying about eleven acres of young trees.

Bowmanville votes on Sunday sports and movie bans

Bowmanville electors approved Sunday sports and movie ballots with 696 yes to sports and 637 to movies while 451 and 457 voted against respectively. Total votes were 1,180 from a 3,870 electorate, about 30.5 percent turnout.

Clarke Township explores fire protection and dog tax changes

Clarke Township Council met April 2 3 discussed changing dog tax collection methods and a per capita levy for Lake Ontario Development Association funding. A meeting with Orono Police Trustees on fire protection was requested, and a subdivision inquiry and line use petition were referred to road inspection.

Clayton Hodgson Speaks on ARDA at Conservative Meeting

M P Clayton Hodgson of Victoria told the Durham County Progressive Conservative Association in Orono about the Agricultural Rehabilitation and Development Act. He described ARDA as a landmark national program for rural development and resource use, aimed at balancing rural and national economies and boosting provincial farmers' share of prosperity. He noted ARDA funding would rely on federal provincial agreement and stressed progress on wheat surplus disposal and the sale of pork and butter.

Clarke Township mill rate increases push tax bills up

Taxpayers face higher municipal and education levies as Clarke Township raises High School rates from 15.9 to 20.8 mills and Orono area rates climb. Residential and commercial property taxes rise, offsetting a small county rate cut from 13.0 to 11.9 mills.
