Orono Scouts And Cubs Banquet Honors Fathers And Sons

About a hundred fathers and sons attended the Father and Son banquet by the First Orono Scout Troop and Welf Cub Pack at Orono United Church. Billy Wade entertained with drums and two conservation films were shown highlighting forest fires and reforestation on the Ed Youngman farm.

Northumberland and Durham Health Unit Annual Report 1955

The 1955 report notes 2089 communicable disease cases with one death from tetanus. Chickenpox 492 and mumps 478 were most common. Two adult non resident polio cases were reported. no diphtheria or smallpox. Typhoid and paratyphoid carriers numbered three and one. Salk vaccine reached schools with 4750 children receiving two doses in spring. 655 clinics immunized 19287. 564 monthly clinics and 1083 chest X-ray exams. Twenty new cases, eight active requiring sanatorium care.

Beautification program to begin at Station and Cobbledick streets

Work is set to start on beautifying the corner of Station Street and Cobbledick Street at Highway 115. The project is a joint effort by the Oreno Horticultural Society and the Orono Police Trustees, featuring top soil, new trees, a cedar post row painted white, and a Village of Orono sign.

Polio Vaccine Clinic Set for May 8 in Northumberland Durham

The Northumberland Durham Health Unit, led by Dr. Charlotte M. Horner, announces polio vaccine clinics for May 8 for eligible district children up to Grade 8 who missed last year or had only one dose. About 7,350 children across 216 schools will be served at 87 centers, with transportation arranged via schools. clinics will use school or community facilities as available.

Orono Senior Baseball Considers Lakeshore League Entry

The Orono Senior Baseball Club met in Bowmanville with teams from Bowmanville Lindsay Port Hope Cobourg and Orono. Orono may join the Lakeshore league again this year but would drop to Ontario playdowns in C or D ball. President-elect for the league is Mr 8 Little of Bowmanville. Orono plans its annual meeting Thursday to elect officers and discuss league entry.

Flames Destroy Bus Carrying Thirty Four Passengers

A chartered Burley Bus Lines bus carrying 34 Port Hope passengers was destroyed by fire about 7 PM one half mile west of Newcastle Village. Driver Harry Burley led passengers to safety. no injuries. Fire departments from Bowmanville and Newcastle arrived late. the $26,000 bus burned for three hours with cause undetermined.

Orono Fish And Hunt Dance And Draw Event

The Orono Fish and Hunt Club sponsors a Dance and Draw at Orono Oddfellow's Hall on Friday evening April 27. Music for round and square dancing will be provided by local musicians and the event promises a good time for all.

Twenty two Graduate From Red Cross Nursing Class

The Orono Red Cross held the nursing class graduation in the Sunday School Auditorium of Orono United Church. Twenty two graduates received pins and certificates, presented by Mrs. W. B. Armstrong. Mrs. J. Gamey was honored with a corsage for leadership. Lunch followed the ceremony.

Orono Athletic Plans Auction and Plays for Youth

The Orono Athletic Association and the Orono Figure Skating Club sponsor an auction on Friday April 27 at the Orono Municipal Building at 8:00 pm to fund summer programs for village youth. Donors can arrange pickup, with items including furniture antiques and tools. The group also advances a three act play directed by W W Watt, seeks participants, pays royalties, and hopes invites come from other centres. Also planned are a park program, a Red Cross swimming and safety course, two youth baseball teams PeeWees and Bantams, and a possible baseball college in Orono with support from the Senior Ball Club.

George Collins to Run Orono Park Booth This Summer

Orono Memorial Park Board approves George Collins to operate the park booth for the 1956 summer season and to supervise the July recreational program funded by the Athletic Association. He will police the park under the contract terms. A town delegation urged safety upgrades at the swimming tank including a life preserver and dock.
