Orono Fish and Hunt Club members object to the village dog at large by-law. They urged the Township Council to void the measure, questioned its legality, and called for officials to be named in a formal protest. The group planned to discuss enforcement and a dance event slated for April 27 at the Oddfellow's Hall.
James Cameron, born near Belfast and a long-time welder in Leskard, Ontario, died April 4 after an illness. A veteran of World War I with service on the Western Front and in the Dardanelles, he sang in Kirby choir and was known for his humour. Funeral held April 6 at Lang Memorial Chapel Orono. wife Hien Margaret Humphreys and son Roy survive him. A local event to raise funds featured a prize drawing, bird house contest, and fishing tackle prizes with plans to reuse old lumber for bird homes.
An afternoon wedding at Newtonville United Church on April 7 1956 joined Miss Ealdyne Fae Jones and Carman Lloyd Cornish. Officiated by Rev S J Pike with music by Frank Gilmer and crooner from Cobourg. Guests, attendants and a luncheon followed, and the couple planned a Mid Eastern States honeymoon.
Orono plans to field a baseball team this year and may join the Lakeshore Baseball league with a view to dropping into Ontario playdowns in C or D class later. If terms fail, Orono will seek admission to the Durham Baseball Association where it debuted years ago.
A Cavan township farmer, David Lurk aged 34, died Friday night after a two vehicle crash on Highway 115 at the seventh concession of Cavan. Three others were injured, two critically, at Civic Hospital in Peterborough. Ian P. Ross 33 and Michael Burns of Peterborough were two of the injured. a third man in critical condition remained unnamed. Police said Lurk, alone in his car, was crossing from a side road when struck broadside by a vehicle carrying General Motors Oshawa plant workers.
Northumberland and Durham councils ended the fox bounty as impractical under present conditions. They considered a municipal rabies inoculation program after clinic success in Campbellford with 1150 animals inoculated, including 400 cats. The group urged applying for free clinics for cats and dogs, seeking a wider program beyond just two species.
The Drone Orphans Hockey Club held a Thursday dinner at Grono Restaurant with players, directors, and management. They praised finances using Port Perry ice, discussed a move to C hockey, and noted travel, considering using Newcastle rink if a new artificial ice plant is built.
The Mission Band of the Orono United Church led by Mrs. Donald Staples and Mrs. A L Tovey held an Afternoon Tea on Friday April 6. Proceeds were about 23 dollars. Young members helped decorate with daffodils and pussy willows and served guests.
The Bowmanville Choral Society presents its Spring Concert on April 18 and 19 at Bowmanville Town Hall. Special artist Frederick Geoghegan, a renowned young organist, performs both nights under the direction of Hugh Martin and Mrs. Albert Cole, with Bowmanville listed as pianist.
The Afternoon W.M.S. and W.A. held an Easter Thank Offering meeting in the Sunday School room led by Mrs. E. R. Rainey. Guests included Mrs. A. A. Crowle of Oshawa who spoke on the Cleveland United Church women assembly. The event featured prayers, reports, a library update, a treasurer’s report, and a closing Mizpah benediction.

They noted $450,000 for a new administration building and over $700,000 for a county home for the aged, with rising hospitalization costs around $9,000. Deputy Reeve W. Carruthers cited a lost $50,000 due to a contested equalized assessment and legal levy issues.
