Liberal Meeting Nominates W. F. Rickard For Durham

The Durham Liberal Association held its annual meeting in Orono to nominate a candidate for the federal election on June 11. W. F. Rickard was nominated after an enthusiastic session with officers re-elected by acclamation. Rickard outlined war and postwar policies and praised Canada’s war effort and government programs.

Tree Planting Week Promoted With Broad Cast Appeal

Orono Provincial Forestry Station reports high demand for trees but limited supply due to labor shortages. CBC radio broadcast publicized local tree planting, urging landowners to plant. Victory Bond Drive Highlighted At W C T U Meeting

The Woman's Christian Temperance Union met at Miss Sherwin's home on April 17 with Miss Sherwin presiding. The group discussed the Spring Medal Contest for June 1, planned a 25 cent to 50 cent ticket, appointed committees, and heard reports on fruit and flowers for the sick.

Orono Lodge No. 486 hosted Oddfellows and Rebekahs from Cobourg Bowmanville Port Hope and Pontypool at Town Hall. The program featured duets solos a play and community singing with officers promising future parades and services.

Ontario Hydro Notes Wartime Strain on Power Service

In 1944 Hydro built about 400 miles of power lines and had around 1200 employees serving in the armed forces or on loan for technical work. Shortages of materials and wartime conditions slow electricity expansion, but the Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario asserts it is doing everything possible to serve the public with urgency.
