Two prizes are awarded yearly by the Bowmanville Canadian Club for essays on Canadian history. This year Jean Turner won the junior prize and Anna Staples won the senior prize with essays on The Role of Canada's Navy in the Present War and Canada's Place In Post-War Aviation.
During Tree Planting Week from April 23 to April 28 the Orono Chamber of Commerce will host a moving picture at the Town Hall titled Trees for Tomorrow and another film to educate landowners on tree planting benefits. The federation notes that members own land and plan to plant substantial numbers of trees after consulting the Orono Provincial Forestry Station. Trees are free and profits from planting go to landowners.
Hon George Dunbar announces opening day moved from April 28 to April 14 due to mild weather. Anglers praise the change, recalling past openings on May 1 and noting firm interest in hitting the streams. The piece ends with a fishers verse questioning truth among anglers.
Clarke Township Council met April 3 in Orono with full attendance. They approved minutes and hospital notices, requested publication of the school grants report, and asked for per pupil cost data from the County Warden. By-law 1111 sets nomination and election times for November and December. Resolutions cover staff, road work, and tax by law changes.
An official release lists 467 Canadian Army Overseas personnel decorated for gallantry. Norman Kenneth Bruton Sergeant of the Royal Canadian Artillery is noted as Died of Wounds after being wounded in August near D Day. Bruton’s wife Joyce and mother Lillian Bruton are named in England and Ontario. Bruton’s brother Cecil is reported missing in air operations in 1943. Community sympathy goes to the Bruton family. A local wedding notice announces Miss Grace Rosetta Warren to Pilot Lieut. John Hunter Keane at Pickering United Church on April 20.
Oshawa Presbyterial of the W M S met at St Andrew's United Church with 140 registered for the 17th annual gathering on March 22. Mrs S Littlewood presided. reports highlighted increases in mission bands, youth education, and leadership, and officers were elected for 1946 with Mrs Littlewood as President and Mrs Rogers as 2nd VP.
The National Film Board program moves to Orono Town Hall on Thursday April 19 at 8 p m under the Durham County Federation of Agriculture and to Newtonville Community Hall on April 18 at 8 p m. The free show aims to inform the public about current national matters.
