George W James Likely Progressive Conservative Candidate for Durham

The Canadian Statesman editor George W James appears poised to enter the Durham County nomination as Progressive Conservative for the June 11 federal election. A May 3 convention at Orono Town Hall will decide his bid to oppose ex-member W F Rickard. James, a former Bowmanville mayor and longtime ally of John Bracken, advocates farm policy and agricultural gains while backing Bracken for national leadership.

German Prisoners Leave Bowmanville Camp

German prisoners depart Bowmanville in two batches, first on April 9 and then April 12, 23 year olds mostly in air force uniforms with decorations. Guards gave no orders as they boarded a train at Bowmanville station led by a senior officer and the Veterans Guard. The Bowmanville Boys' Training School now sits empty awaiting future use.

Butter Production In Ontario Reaches High March Mark

Ontario creameries show a sharp March rise in butter production as milk supply grows. Cream quality improves, with relief proposed to allow twice weekly cream collection from May 1 to October 1. Creameries also face difficulty hiring qualified staff for the season.

Good Will Bible Class Meeting Plans Special May 8

The Good Will Bible Class met at the homes of Mrs. Fred Tamblyn and Mrs. Chas. Miller with Mrs. McLaren presiding. A special meeting was scheduled for May 8 at Mrs. R. Moffat’s home to hear Miss Somerville who has spent years in China. An offering for Save the Children Fund raised 15 dollars. Mrs. K. Gamsby led a study on Adventuring together in Christian living in the Congregation.

8th Victory Loan Surpasses Canada Sales Milestones

Ottawa reports the 8th Victory Loan sales total reach 75,660,450 on Tuesday with combined Monday-Tuesday purchases of 142,851,750. Figures compare to 77,269,800 for day two of the 7th loan and 145,530,100 for the first two days of that issue.

Local Trout Season Opens With Warm Spring Day

Opening day on Saturday April 14 brought clear skies and warm weather ideal for fishing. Anglers report diverse catches with BILL DAVEY leading at thirteen trout. others like ORME GAMSBY and BILL RIDDELL EACH took eleven, while several posted nine to eleven trout. Many youngsters fished, promising more reports as the season continues.

Keane Warren Wedding At Pickering United Church

Grace Rosetta Warren and Frt Lieutenant John Hunter Keane wed in Pickering on April 20 1945 in a double ring ceremony. Attendants wore varied pastel gowns as family and friends gathered at Genosha Hotel for a reception. Post ceremony, Emile Vaillantcourt named Canada’s first minister to Cuba, while farm labour shortages prompt conscription officials to place men 16 to 65 in agriculture.

Orono Women's Institute Elects Officers At Annual Meeting

The Orono Women's Institute held its annual meeting in the Council Chamber on Friday April 20 electing officers for the year. Treasurer reported 188.70 on hand and 225 War Savings Certificates. Mrs. Gamey spoke on First Aid in the Home covering appendicitis poliomyelitis sprains fractures and choking. Officers include Hon Pres Mrs O W Rolph Pres Mrs E Dean and other posts with delegates named for the Hampton convention. Lunch followed and the gathering closed with God Save the King.
