Fire destroys shipping room at Orono Wood Products

Two fire departments from Orono and Newcastle battled a blaze that started in the packing and shipping room overnight causing over 20000 dollars in damage. The shipping room was completely destroyed and the plant’s roof and windows suffered major damage. A unique electronic glue curing machine was likely ruined. The plant, home to moulded plywood and new furniture lines, expects a slow return to full operation with 27 employees affected.

Tillsonburg Advances in Playoff with 4-2 Series Win

Tillsonburg Pan Driects clinched the semi final over Bowmanville Orono Combines winning Thursday 7-2 in Tillsonburg and 4-2 in Bowmanville to take the series 4-2. Injuries hampered Bowmanville while Tillsonburg rode strong offense led by Land and a home crowd. The team now faces Georgetown for the Ontario Championship as election talk and Parliament notes intrude in the column.

First Orone Wolf Cub Pack Hosts Banquet and Meeting

The 1st Orone Wolf Cub Pack held a banquet then resumed tests. Brucie Mercer led the meeting with Inspection and Grand Howl. Cubs played two games and recognized top stars Baloo Cathy Armstrong and Akela Carolyn Jones.

Edith Sherwin United Church Deaconess Died At 69

Edith May Sherwin a United Church deaconess in Winnipeg died March 6 1957 at Memorial Hospital Bowmanville in her 70th year. Born September 17 1887 in Rose Neath she worked at All People’s Mission Winnipeg before returning to Ontario to Orono. Funeral March 8 in Bowmanville with Rev Shaver and Rev Kitchen. Interment in Orono Cemetery.

County Told To Up Road Mill Rate

The roads report recounts an interview with Highways Minister Jas Allan and A W Goodfellow who urged counties to raise their road mill rate by two or three mills and warned that lack of increase could lead to no department assistance. Spring Session Opens in New Cobourg Counties Building

The United Counties of Northumberland and Durham held their spring session in Cobourg on April 11 to approve an addition to the Cobourg home for the aged costing about 400000 with a 200000 grant from Ontario Welfare. Officials praised the new building and discussed roads funding and tax measures as they moved to the June agenda.

Wo mans Association reports tea sale profit and honors member

The Wo mans Association met April 11 in the Sunday School room with Mrs Kitchen presiding. Treasurers report shows 64.73 earned from the February Tea and Home Cooking Sale. Members sent acknowledgments to the sick and bereaved, donated 25 to Local Red Cross and 5 to United Nations membership.

Evangelism Meeting Inspires Ladies Group Gathering

Mrs. Everett Brown performed a solo It is no Secret what God can do inspiring the 45 ladies in attendance. About 27 visits were reported as the group planned friendlier outreach. Lunch and social time were shared, served by Mrs. Tamblyn and her helpers.
