Durham Federation Of Agriculture Show a Balance Of 329.90

The first annual meeting of the Durham Federation of Agriculture was held in Newcastle Community Hall on April 2 with strong county representation. President J F Heyland reported progress and praised the federation’s growth within the Ontario network. Financials showed receipts 524.95 expenses 195.05 leaving a balance of 329.90. Donations totaled multiple local groups. expenses covered rentals literature and Ontario Federation dues. Next meeting pending Board decision.

Oxonic Horticultural Society Plans Public Plantings

About thirty five members met at the home of Mr and Mrs W E Davey to discuss beautification projects for the village. A motion to plant a tree in front of the town hall and a committee to seek improvements to the Durham Central Agricultural Society grounds were decided. Secretary Mrs C Knox handled orders for spring flowers and plants. Treasurer Mrs Dickson reported a balance of 66 dollars and 96 cents. President Mrs E J Hamm wrapped up the business portion before social activities with piano music, lunch, a guessing contest and card games.

Leskard farmers plant permanent snow fence along road

Farmers in the Leskard district began a project to plant 2,000 Scotch pines along 1½ miles of the Sixth Concession road. A double row in the worst drift areas aims to keep the road passable in winter without county plows. Trees from Orono’s forestry station are donated, with community labor provided free, and the plan expects seven foot trees in five to six years improving winter motor access.

Thompson Bradley wedding in Orono Ontario

A quiet wedding was solemnized Thursday at the United Church Parsonage in Orono. Amelia Bradley and John Thompson, both of Orono, were united in marriage with Rev. S. Littlewood officiating. A reception followed at the bride’s Park Street home before the couple departed for a Western Ontario honeymoon and planned to reside in their new Kirby home.

Canada war front shows government plea and mobilization drive

Canada’s War Effort reviews April 2 to 9 1942 report a government appeal to voters to back a plebiscite on war measures and credits the new Great Britain army HQ under Lt Gen McNaughton. Dry Vegetables For Shipment Abroad and Home Use

Ten members of the Orono Chamber of Commerce met Monday evening at Kumrite Apartments. A committee was appointed to explore establishing a dehydration plant with Ottawa authorities to dry store or ship vegetables including tomatoes to England. Discussions covered a weekly band engagement in summer and ARP bomb threat planning with no cost to implement.

Mr. and Mrs. A Harris Celebrate 25th Anniversary

A surprise party honored Mr and Mrs Albert Harris of Orono on April 14 1942 for their 25th silver wedding anniversary. About sixty friends and relatives from Oshawa Whitby Highland Creek Lindsay Pontypool Thornton s Corners and Clarke Township attended. They received a bridge lamp end table and a silver rose basket as gifts and a formal address from Mrs J McCullough Crono.
