Township Council Grants Orono Portion Of Per Capita Grant
Orono Police Trustees and Clarke Township Council reviewed the annual per capita grant and mill rate changes. The 1955 plan increases village funds to about 2350 from 2000 in 1954, with a 3.5 to 3.75 mill township rate cut and a 50 cent per person per capita grant to the village, plus 35 cents to Bowmanville Hospital.

Durham Junior Farmers Dramatic Festival Opens At Orono
The First Junior Farmer Drama Festival on March 28 featured several hopeful groups. Winning play A Pair of Lunatics by Hope Juniors starred Margaret Aitken and Allin Osborne. Second place went to A Marriage Proposal by Clarke Township Juniors with Betty McHolm Merrill Bown and Jack Alin. Best actress was Margaret Aiken of Millbrook. best actor Clifford Bristow received a tie pin and cuff links.

Orono Fire Department Responds to Grass Fire
The Orono Fire Department answered its first call of the year on a Saturday morning, tackling a grass blaze behind Robert Sherwin’s home. The fire spread but was halted with no property damage as a water supply on the truck proved sufficient. the village reported no prior fires in the winter season.

Widow of David Moffatt dies in Oshawa age 90s
Mrs Elizabeth F Moffat a long time Oshawa resident died at Oshawa General Hospital on Friday April 8 in her 90s. Born September 17 1864 in Cornwall England she married in 1886 at Orono Ontario. Survived by two daughters two sons five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Burial in Oshawa Union Cemetery after memorial service April 11 at Armstrong Funeral Home.

The Orono Choir with guest artists presented a two hour Easter music program at Orono United Church. Soloists included Glen Allin, Ross Metcalf, and A A Drummond with Kimi Hambourg on violin. The group offered solos, duets, two anthems, hymns, and violin selections to a very engaged congregation.

Seven Mill Increase In Darlington Tax Rate
Darlington township council approved a by law raising the overall mill rate by about seven mills for the current year. The roads levy leads at 10 mills with a major road program planned including surfacing and new machinery.
