Fine Art Exhibit At Northway Restaurant

A two day exhibit and sale opened at Northway Restaurant on Highway 115 south of Orono. Organized by Mr. and Mrs. Louis Frenchman the show features work from Lindsay Port Hope Havelock Bowmanville Newcastle Oshawa Tyrone Orono and more. Prices range from 2 to 75 dollars for paintings and crafts with no commission on items under 25. Six of sixty nine paintings sold in four days. The event aims to run until October 10 with many artists showcased including Amy Van den Hueval Margaret Rickaby Ruth Taggart Donald Staples and others.

Mrs Wood Leads WMS Meeting With Cape Breton Talk

A joint Haster Thank-offering meeting of WMS groups one and two was held at the Orono United Church Sunday School Auditorium. Mrs B Long presided and introduced guest speaker Mrs Woodland of Newcastle who spoke on Cape Breton with slides. Sixty-one calls to shut-ins were reported and May 1 set for overseas relief bale packing.

North Way Restaurant Hosts Stunning Local Show

Orono Hi-Teens Reorganize Plan April 15 Dance

About twenty teens met at Miss Marilyn Cobbledick's home to revive the Orono Hi-Teens group electing officers for the year. Paul Tamblyn was named president and Darlene Ransberry secretary with Bonnie Couvier as treasurer. The group scheduled a town hall dance for Saturday April 15 with local musicians providing music for round and square dances. The Recreation Commission led by Charles Hutton assisted in organizing.

Lands And Forests To Sell Confocated Tackle

The Department of Lands and Forests plans three Ontario sales of seized fishing gear this spring. Lindsay hosts the first sale on April 8 with about 100 items including rods reels tackle boxes landing nets and motors. Viewing in Lindsay runs April 7 1 to 9 pm April 8 1 to 9 pm and April 9 9 am to 12 pm.

Mr and Mrs H S Cobbledick and family visited his mother Mrs W Cobbledick in Leamington. Ralph De Jong of Orono won in The Oshawa Times circulation drive and left for a three day trip to Ottawa. Jo Ann Rutherford of Toronto and Paul Rutherford of Kingston spent Easter with Mr and Mrs S B Rutherford. Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Everett Stapleton formerly Hazel Robinson on their marriage at Orono United Church on April 5.

Credit Union Seeks New Members in Orono District

The Orono District Credit Union holds a board meeting on March 28 at the Co op Building with 119 members. Officers elected include President Percy Werry and Vice-President Charles Gilkes, with Alfred Perrin as Secretary and Russell Osborne as Federation rep. The Education and Publicity Committee met to discuss increasing membership.

Park Board Seeks Citizens Support for Orono Pool Project

The Park Board conducts a blitz in Orono and nearby areas on April 14 and 15 to raise 3500 for completing the Orono Park swimming pool and a new wading pool for children. The project total includes equipment, fencing, and a cement walk around the pool, with Provincial grants expected after the target is met. Donations may be given to Alma Cattell, Ralph Hardware, or the Orono Times Office.

Orono Trustees Set Nine Mills Budget for 1961

The Orono Police Trustees set expenditures totaling nine mills the same as 1960 and 1961 assessment rising to 685200 from 650000. Budget includes 1500 for street lighting 1750 for Municipal Building furnace wiring painting Hydro office and locker room. A 7880 grant from Department of Agriculture reduces expenditures and a 1869 annual drill cost to Ontario Water Resources Commission is included. Land purchases and tree planting plus street painting and curb work are planned.

Trustees Weigh Costs and Benefits of Orono Incorporation

At an Orono Village meeting the Police Trustees endorsed incorporation to gain local control and grants. They outlined costs including road work fire protection and administration, and argued incorporation could reduce overall village taxes while allowing better planning and services.
