Apple Growers Vote On Promotion Scheme In Newcastle

Sixty one apple growers cast ballots Tuesday evening on an advertising and promotion program at a Newcastle meeting for Durham growers. The overall provincial result will be tabulated next week. individual county results remain undisclosed. The session, chaired by Clare Allin, featured Dr John Brown and speakers Harold Bonter and Irwin Colwich supporting the scheme amid opposition over advertising Ontario apples versus imports.

Orono Amateur Athletic Dance Draw Nets About 250 Dollars

The Orono Amateur Athletic Association held a successful dance and draw at Orono Town Hall last Saturday evening. About 100 attendees enjoyed round and square dancing with Clare Nesbitt's four piece orchestra. Tickets sold for 1.00 dollars. the fifty fifty draw winner was Thornhill resident Hugh Martin. Total revenue from the dance and draw exceeded 250 dollars with net earnings around 250 dollars.

Changes in apple levy and spray chart discussed

Morley Webster outlined proposed levy rates if the measure passes. Fresh market apples would be taxed per bushel, processing apples per cwt, and juice apples per cwt if enacted. He also noted changes in the apple spray chart.

Orono Municipal Water System Hearing Faces Few Objections

A Municipal Board hearing on Orono water system drew about forty property owners and ended in forty-five minutes. Only Mr Ludgate presided. findings will go to the Board for tentative approval within two weeks, with final approval after tenders. Estimated annual cost per user is about 64 dollars.

Orono Hi-Cs Plan April Activities And Guest Event

Orono Hi-Cs held a Sunday meeting in the new Co E Building with 38 members. Devotions by Cathy Wilson and Cameron Perrault on sin followed brief talks on Christian Vocations Conference at Queen’s University and Hills Conference in Belleville. Plans for April included a church service, choir, welcoming, ushers, and offering duties led by Grant Yeo and Lynn Bailey. A luncheon will follow in the Main Hall, and April 19 features a bus trip to St Paul’s United Church in Scarboro with speaker Mr. B Little of Toronto Juvenile and Family Court. The group may hold an Auction Sale after bus costs, and a Bible Quiz was held with bias noted.

Orono students raise funds for Ottawa trip

Orono Public School seventh and eighth graders held a bazaar and Master tea on March 26 to raise 144.00 for their Ottawa excursion April 28. Parents and adults attended as students baked sold and ran games. prizes included a cake won by Mrs. Mabel Goode.

Orono Girls Continue To Play Hockey

The Orono girls hockey team organized this year remains active with two Ontario tournament appearances. In Alliston last Saturday they tied Port Perry 2 2 after overtime and advanced on a first goal rule. Francis Rickard and Jo Ann Cameron scored for Orono before a loss to Cannington in the second game.

Port Hope Mill Rate Lower for Second Year

Port Hope council reduced the 1964 mill rates slightly below 1963 levels with commercial at 2.789 mills and residential at 83.876 mills. Last year’s reductions were slightly larger, and 1963 rates were 2.89 commercial and 83.93 residential.

The Orono girls return to the ice this Saturday for a tournament in Uxbridge. They face Richmond Hill in their opening match after a 12 to 0 score by Cannington in a previous game.

Bonnie Graham Weds Llewellyn Jeffs in Oshawa Ceremony

Bonnie Joan Graham and Llewellyn Frederick Jeffs married at St George's Memorial Church Oshawa with Rev Canon F G Ongley officiating. Bridesmaids and guests wore aqua dresses while reception gifts included a vacuum cleaner and bone china set as coworkers celebrated the couple planning a Bahamas honeymoon.
