Fire Destroys Tobacco Barn Worth 17000 Near Crooked Creek

Early Saturday a barn and equipment at Young Bros. Oshawa farm west of Crooked Creek were destroyed by fire. Tobacco valued at 17000, a planter and implements were lost. a tractor and irrigation pump survived. Firefighters arrived at 2:45 a.m. after cars blocked access. Cause unknown. Fire truck from Orono responded.

United Counties Cut Mill Rate by a Quarter Mill

The United Counties Council approved a mill rate of 12.00 for 1964 marking a 0.25 decline from 12.25 in 1963. The lower rate stems from higher county assessments totaling 4,749,585 and is expected to raise 1,016,995 to fund operations.

Trent Members View Historic Buildings Tour

Three members of Trent University Site Development Committee led by Professor Denis Smith and Dean R. H. Sadleir and John Anderson toured historic buildings in the Trent Valley and Kawartha Lakes with Master Planning Architect R. J. Thom and Toronto architect Napier Simpson. The visit aimed to broaden the committee’s knowledge for planning the university’s permanent site.

Clarke Township Education Levies Lowering Tax Mills

The Clarke Township mill rates for 1969 show a net tax reduction for most residents. The High School rate drops to 21.393 from 24.672, and township revenue changes modestly downward. Police Village areas see mixed shifts with police rate cuts offset by township rate increases on homes, while public school rates fall 1.5 mills residential.

Well-known Orono Man Dies In 91st Year

William Edward Davey of Orono died at Memorial Hospital in his 91st year after months of ill health. A known local figure, he helped in the Klondike Gold Rush era, served 41 years as Orono Fire Chief, and was among Oshawa area's first Chevrolet salesmen. He was active in the United Church and local groups. Surviving are four daughters, four grandchildren, and one great grandchild. The funeral was at Orono United Church with interment in Orono Cemetery.
