Blackwater Ontario breeder Bill Stone milks 18 cows on a practical setup and owns Bonheur Vera Pabst, Canada’s champion butterfat producer in the 305 day class with 18 107 pounds milk and 686 pounds fat at 3.79 percent. Vera later yielded 20 290 pounds milk and 774 pounds fat across a full year.

Orono Girl Guides Banquet Welcomes Mothers and Leaders

Orono Girl Guides held a turkey banquet at the Orono United Church in the Sun day School room with about seventy attendees. The Local Association sponsored the event with Rangers Guides and Brownies helping with setup and serving. A guest speaker from Toronto spoke on Guiding followed by a short program and songs including I wish I was a little Mosquito.

Hi Teens to Choose Local Beauty Queen in Orono

The Hi-Teens of Orono plan a Friday dance at Township Hall with Paul Minnicolo orchestra and a buffet lunch. A beauty queen Miss Orono will be chosen, with four finalists named earlier and three runners up. The Orono Chamber of Commerce supports a $25 prize. contestants must be current or former Orono High School students.

The Orone Players present their three act comedy You Cant Take It With You on May 8 and 9 in evenings. The production opens a weekend of performances with a bright cast and lively period humor.

The Orono United Church Women’s Association met April 2 with 14 ladies. Presiding was Mrs H Allen. Devotions featured Easter readings and a meditation. Proceeds from a Smegas bord supper totaled 140 dollars. bank balance stood at 525.97. A 25 dollar Red Cross donation was approved. Delegates to Tyrone Presbytery were chosen. Training Centre images from Five Oaks near Paris Ontario drew interest.

William Newton Cobbledick died after short illness

William Newton Cobbledick died March 5 1959 after a brief illness. He was 80, born August 2 on the Sixth Line, married to Louisa Dundass in 1908, and long farmer on the Sixth Line before moving to Orono. He worked at Goodyear Bowmanville until 1953. Survived by two sons Harold Orono and Jack Toronto, daughter Enid Mrs Stewart Cowan Germany, three grandchildren and sister Mrs H Herod Mimico. Funeral in Orono United Church March 8. Interment Orono Cemetery. Pallbearers listed.

Durham County to Build Three New High Schools

Durham County district high school board met with municipal councils at Bowmanville High School to seek debenture approval for three new schools costing about 1.3 million dollars. Plans call for 400 student schools in Darlington and Clarke Township and a 150 student school in Millbrook, aiming for operation by September 1960.

Hawaii Talk Highlights Solitary Islandto Island Visit

Miss Kate Foster spoke to the Orone W M S Easter Thank Offering meeting at the Afternoon Auxiliary, describing Hawaii, its people and churches, and recommending a Globe and Mail article. she shared slides from her visit, noting Hawaii becomes the 50th state. A business note announced a May bare packing day for used clothing and recycling items.

Chamber Seeks Grant for Orono Rink Costs and Park Expansion

Seventeen Orono Chamber of Commerce members heard reports on rink finances with $665 borrowed to cover costs and a potential grant of about $680 to erase the loan. The Police Trustees noted a 50 percent grant from the Parks Integration Board to extend the park, and merchants debated store hours and a by law for overnight parking on Main Street.
