Clarke Township Council Debates Truck Road Damage and Park Street Work

Clarke Township Council discussed road damage from trucks and half load signs. They reviewed the Township Garage roof repair costs and truck replacement options. Discussion covered Park Street oiling, Church Street extension to the Old Cemetery, and cemetery access for new lots. The road voucher totaled 3714.05, plus 15 for Orono Horticultural Society. An extra rent for electric stove was approved to reduce fire risk. Meeting adjourned to May.

Departure marked for Kendal couple from Sunday School event

A large Kendal gathering in the Sunday School room on Thursday night April 1 honored Mr. L. D. Bell and Hilda as they prepare to move to Orono. The event featured music, poems, and a, address praising Bell for over 25 years as Sunday School superintendent and church elder.

Mrs. A. A. Scott, wife of the United Church moderator, spoke at St. Andrew’s United Church Oshawa on India’s independence and evolving missionary work. She described a rising vote, economic strides, and social changes including a relaxed caste system yet continued arranged marriages and limited dating.

Canada faces cancer as a national priority with increased support from governments and volunteers. The Canadian Cancer Society seeks 500000 dollars in April to expand diagnostics treatment and research across Ontario and the country including education efforts and the Mobile Little Red Door program to reach workers and communities.

Millbrook Reformatory Tenders Called For

Hon. John Foote at the Millbrook Banquet said tenders for the new reform institution to be built in Millbrook would be called for last week after plans were completed. The $2,500,000 facility will house 250 inmates and sit near the station in the northwest village, extending toward the Fallis line.

Clarke Township Regulated as Township for Hunting

Orone Fish and Hunt Club notes approval by the Provincial Government to declare Clarke Township a regulated township. Hunting licenses will be required for non groundhog hunting, with at least 100 non resident licenses. The club elected K Tolmie A F McKenzie and G Watson to the Game Commission. Township councillors will oversee license sales. One thousand five hundred pheasants will be released into the township this year.

Organizing chairs Millson Hamilton Lowery Forrester and others lead a door to door canvass starting April 26 while three mobile units of the Ontario Department of Health support the effort to screen residents over age twelve for chest abnormalities and tuberculosis.
