Albert Morton Receives Certificate At Orono Fair Meeting

About fifteen Derham Central Agricultural Society directors met at Orange Hall Orono to plan improvements for the Fall Fair. Reports from Carlos and Mrs Tamblyn on the Agricultural Societies Convention were given. A committee inspected an Anglican church shed for possible purchase to shelter cattle at the fair. The secretary treasurer reported a balance exceeding three hundred dollars. Countywide displays and storage concerns led to dropping glass cases for Domestic Science. Albert Morton received a certificate honoring his long service including presidency and beef cattle division chairmanship.

First Warble Fly Treatments Urged For Cattle In Ontario

Ontario Live Stock Branch warns cattle owners in by law townships to treat cattle for warbles between April 1 and 18 and again 30 days later. Two treatments are required for effective control with rotenone derris powder used in either brush or sprayer method ensuring the mixture reaches the grub.

Village changes as stores expand and highway project begins

Construction in the village includes Armstrong's store remodelling for a self-serve Food Market and Rolph's Hardware enlargements with a new warehouse. The saw mill on Station Street is being dismantled for a Newcastle to Orono highway, and the Orono Community Memorial Park booth is being widened three feet. Winters and Gerry carry out the work.

April Meeting of Woman's Association Encourages Joyful Service

The April meeting on Tuesday 18 with strong attendance heard prayers, hymns, and a devotional on Easter and the Cross. Mrs. Rainey noted the presbyterial in Bowmanville April 27, reported on the Parsonage committee, and guests Mrs. Ives of Bowmanville spoke on happiness.

Clarke Union H S Club Holds April Meeting

The Clarke Union Home and School Club met on Friday April 9 with a social hour and lunch afterward. Mrs Carson sang with Ariene Rainey at the piano, Mr Glenn Allin at the piano, and the three Davey sisters tap danced. Miss Dowdy of Bowmanville showed Coronation and Bowmanville pictures.

Ontario farmers form first co operative farm near Kingston

Seven Ontario farmers and their families launch Hemlock Park Co-Operative Farm five miles north of Kingston to cut costs and labor by pooling resources. The 1800 acre operation along the Rideau Canal is under provincial charter with Ghent as president and is a member of the Co-Operative Union of Ontario.

152 Year Old Lake Sturgeon Caught in Ontario

A lake sturgeon of 152 years was caught last July in Lake of the Woods Ontario. Biologists from the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests at Maple dated the age by microscopic analysis of a fin ray cross section. The fish measured 81 inches and weighed 215 pounds. Harold Johnson of Kenora caught it.

Surplus Reported By United Counties For 1953

Northumberland and Durham counties closed 1953 with a reported surplus of 29 000 after carry over and improved finances. The audit commended Treasurer Ken Symons for book accuracy and noted only three over budget items including the jail. Bank loans totaled 65 000 with 18 000 on hand leaving a net 46 000. indigent hospital debts were reduced to 170.

Fish And Hunt Undertake Stream Improvement Project

The Oshawa Fish and Hunt Club, joined by members from the Oshawa club, begins a stream improvement plan on Donald Hamm and Everett Brown properties to create more trout shelter. About 40 to 50 falls will be installed by placing logs and stones, aiming to deepen holes and boost fish population. first work session Friday at 8 30 AM, bring a shovel or axe.

Port Hope and Hope Township Seek Separation from Durham High School

Amid council sessions in Northumberland Durham counties, Port Hope and Hope Township push to withdraw from the Durham County High School Area. The petition cites distance and tuition issues and names Mayor W. N. Moore of Port Hope and Stuart Gray of Hope Township as signatories.
