Horse Named Maude Dies of Apoplexy at Orange County Brewery
A horse named Maude, eight years old, owned by the Orange County Brewery team, died Friday morning from apoplexy due to a clot on the brain during a one week vacation. The brewery keeps its horses well rested each year. A companion horse named Pearl remains healthy. Dr. Herbert W. Bush assisted and noted such deaths are rare, the first in twelve years of practice.

Death of Guardsman at Surratt Hanging
Charles Benkenstein died in Monroe on Tuesday aged 75. Born in Germany he came to America as a youth and served in Civil War units including Co K 524th N. Vols and the Veteran Reserve Corps. He later served as a guardsman at Mrs Surratt’s execution in Washington. Survived by two children Henry and Mary. Funeral held at Monroe Methodist Church with J J Hearty officiating. Isaac Nicoll Post G A R conducted graveside rites.

Old warrant operative as colored man jailed for assault
A former resident, a colored man, was sent to Goshen jail for three months after pleading guilty to a 1997 assault charge. The incident at Fulton street involved a knife slash at a bar, with the suspect returning from Baltimore recently. The prisoner said he came back to see his ill mother.

Port Jervis wreckers recovered caboose 4235 at Shohola Glen Pa. It was a gift to Robert E Peary by Erie Railroad president E B Thomas on July 9 1898 and sailed north on the Windward from New York July 4 1895. Used as Pearys headquarters at Etah Grinnell Land during the polar voyage and wintered aboard the Windward after transfer at Prayer Harbor. The piece, later repaired as a Peary relic, remained tied to Arctic explorations until a 1262 return and is linked to Peary Arctic Club thanks for four years of service.

One Train Rider Discharged In Court
William Christian of El Yjenville was arraigned on illegal train riding charges after pleading guilty and explaining his case.
