Copan the Mother City of the Mayas
The Copan ruins in western Honduras near the Guatemalan border reveal an ancient Maya metropolis set in a fertile valley. Noted are the Great Plaza, hieroglyphic stairways, and five standing monuments with altars, plus a rivercut substructure showing growth epochs. Copan’s early inscriptions are cruder and older, justifying its title as the Mother City of the Mayas.
