Washington reports the Senate will vote on the Canadian reciprocity bill July 22, the wool tariff revision bill July 27, the free list bill August 1, the congressional reapportionment bill August 3, and the statehood bill for Arizona and New Mexico on August 7. About 3 000 naval militia landsmen from nine states and the District of Columbia participate as a mock assault fleet sails 200 miles off Sandy Hook. The blue fleet, commanded by Rear Admiral Hugo Osterhaus, faces the red fleet under Commander E E Eberle in a two day night drill with battleships Connecticut as flagship.
A.J. Roberts, an aeronaut from New York, started a trial dirigible flight to Philadelphia and faced contrary winds. With gasoline exhausted he pulled the rip cord and landed in the Atlantic half a mile from shore before swimming to Allenhurst. He was revived with stimulants and recovered to recount the incident.
