Marywood Campus to be Demolished for Gated Homes

The Marywood Pastoral Campus once housing the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange will be demolished in early 2016 to create a gated community of 40 single family homes. Bus, 2811 E Villareal Drive, dates from 1961 and was run by the Sisters of Providence as a girls high school. The Diocese bought the property in 1976 for its central offices, then moved in 2018 to Christ Cathedral.

Timeline traces Marywood construction in 1961 and dedication in 1964, the establishment of the Diocese of Orange in 1976, site purchases in 1979, and use as diocesan headquarters through 2013. It notes 2011 acquisiton of Crystal Cathedral, renaming to Christ Cathedral in 2012, sale of Marywood to New Home Co in 2013, and 2015 16 environmental and traffic studies with demolition planned for spring 2016 and first model homes expected in spring 2017.

Green cremations take root with California firm Paws & Claws

Orange based Paws & Claws offers water cremations using alkaline hydrolysis, a process praised as clean and green but still limited in California where human use is illegal. Owner Brian Kendrath, a 20 year funeral director, pursued the method after reading about it in a trade magazine. See PETS on page 4.

Co founder of Orange City News dies after cancer battle

Dan Wooldridge co founded the Orange City News in 1969 to fill a local newspaper void and was active in county politics for years. He died October 4 from lung cancer, after earning a history degree from Santa Ana College in 1968. See founder page 4.
