Ottawa reports Parliament plans to complete its legislative agenda by May 12 before prorogation for the King and Queen visit. Key measures include agricultural bills with wheat price guarantees, crop insurance adjustments, and a central mortgage bank to stabilize debt and mortgage flows nationwide.
Twenty three military bands will perform in five Toronto parks on May 22 as part of civic celebrations after the royal visit. The Board of Control with Elwood Hughes of the C N E will oversee events from 8 30 to 10 30 p m featuring parades fireworks and community singing at Beaches Eglinton Earls Court Willowvale and High Parks. At least three brass bands and one pipe or bugle band per park are listed with names including 48th Highlanders Queen's Own Rifles Irish Regiment and Lorne Scots among others.
The annual meeting of the General Council of The United Church of Canada in Toronto reported a shortage of about fifty ordained ministers and a lack of suitable candidates for the ministry. The Right Rev John W Woodside presided and Rev Dr Gordon A Sisco was secretary. Plans will inform United Churches of the need and challenge youth with ministry.

A 20th annual national convention is slated for Niagara Falls August 3 4 and 5 under managing director C. W. Charters Brampton. A council meeting discussed pavement on Exth and George Streets tax sale sites and John Street Kill repairs. The United Church Tennis Club is granted ditch access on Chapel Street and a civic holiday is proclaimed for May 22 1939. The 1938 Collector's Roll will be accepted and tax arrears collected.
Clara Ellen Dwyer daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Dwyer married Joseph Henry Wilcox Georgetown son of Mr Joseph Wilcox and the late Mrs Wilcox at St Peters Cathedral on May 6. The bride’s brother gave her away due to her father’s illness. Rev P J Kelly officiated with music by Miss Veronica Scollard. The couple will reside in Georgetown after a brief motor trip.
Miss Norma Ethel Smith daughter of C E Smith married Samuel Weymouth Tennant son of S C Tennant at St. Joans Church of England Stew arttown. Rev W G Brook officiated. Bride wore white satin with tuile halo and carried American Beauty roses. The couple will reside in Stewarttown.
The Countess of Strathmore Chapter met Monday evening at Mrs J Wallace Thompson's home. Mrs K D Barber reported on the Provincial Annual Convention in Hamilton April 20 21. Illness prevented Mrs Barr from presenting her England Coronation lecture. a later date is hoped.
The Boys Safety Patrol, sponsored by the Georgetown Lions Club, has operated four months with no accidents as heavy highway traffic surrounds the school. Patrol members wear white belts and capes for visibility while motorists recognize the crossing is under control. The Lions Club provides waterproof hats and white marked capes, earning praise for their safety support.
The Halton Presbyterial WMS executive met at Burlington United Church on May 2 with Mrs. Earl Wilson presiding. New members were welcomed including Mrs. J W Chapman and Mrs. B Mowat. Various appointments and speakers were announced for the coming year. Sectional tallies and a June picnic report were noted.
