Ontario residents rally to oppose Lord's Day Act expansion for Sundays, urging George town and church groups to protest. The petition warns against legalizing commercialized Sunday entertainments and calls for legislative resistance and public signatures from Georgetown residents.
Walton Memorial United Church marks twenty years of WMS activity with greetings from sister churches and presiding officers. Memorial service honors 15 deceased members as charter members noted.
More than 600 Milton residents suffer from a flu or grippe sweeping the province. About a third of Milton’s population are ill. Dr George E. Syer says it is the worst for years but mild in form. School attendance falls. 67 of 240 public pupils absent, others in high school also out.
The Georgetown Lions Club carnival drew a large crowd last Friday with skating to the Lorne Scots Band, costume prizes, races, and a 1 1 draw with Brampton. Prize winners included Della Poole, Margaret Hoare, W Schenk, Mike Davidson, and Peggy Kelly among many. Lions members credited for the event and thanked donors and merchants for financial support and merchandise donations.
Georgetown Pirates claim the Rumsey Cup in the Acton Rural League after a 3-2 victory over Acton Band in their fourth game. Earlier rounds included a disputed 1-1 tie with Norval where Sargent scored for Georgetown and Hoare secured a shutout amidst controversy over a goal judged by the line.
The Women's Association of the United Church held a crokinole party in the school room on Thursday evening. Attendance was down due to stormy weather but those who attended enjoyed the evening. Mrs. F Hustler won the high ladies score and Garnet Laidlaw won the high men score. The community reports several residents ill with the flu. Owing to the weather church attendance Sunday was down and Mount Pleasant United Church service was cancelled. Miss Marion Laing of Guelph visited Col. A L Noble over the weekend.
Authorities have been asked to investigate activities of rival groups and factions that may hinder harmony. The request stresses orderly relations and peaceful cooperation between the groups to prevent conflict.
Two hundred Pauls United Church members sign a protest against Sunday open for commercialized sports. The church official board cites loss of Sabbath rest, harm to souls, and encouragement of broader open Sunday demands. Rev Gordon states church groups will oppose a bill for open Sabbath in the assembly.
A double funeral was held in Erin on Saturday for Mrs. Thomas Binnmle and Miss Sarah Binnie whose deaths occurred within 48 hours. A public service in Burns' Presbyterian Church was led by Rev. P. W. Murray with Rev. Robert Sedgeworth assisting. Interment followed in Erin Cemetery. Surviving are two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. John Cunningham of Toronto and Miss Janet of Erin, as well as Robert and Thomas, both of Erin.
Last Friday marked the global Women’s Day of Prayer with Georgetown women gathering in St. George’s basement. Despite bad weather, attendance from all churches was fair and Mrs. W. G. O. Thompson led the meeting. Mrs. Sutcliffe gave the theme address, Mrs. Feller sang a solo, and many ladies contributed.
A small group of Georgetown pupils displayed water colors tempera and pastels at the home of Mrs Alexander Bruyns. She aims to foster appreciation and self expression rather than train children as artists noting local classes could be expanded through a ladies organization and a public library Saturday sessions were discussed.
Georgetown hosts the first meeting for the Georgetown chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire at Mrs. R. F. Barber’s home. Officers elected for the coming year include Regent Mrs. K. D. Barber and multiple secretaries and vice regents reflecting a broad charitable and educational program.
A Kitchener physician reported three instances of lung hemorrhages caused by influenza amid an Ontario outbreak. He declined to name himself, noted many flu cases across the region, and said he would not comment on the disease’s exact nature. Weather conditions recently worsened illness prevalence.
The W A held a regular meeting at Mrs. John Snow’s home with devotionals by Mrs Vannatter and Mrs Snow. Roll call cited love scripture verses, followed by crox Inde games and committee served refreshments.
Monday night attendance remained high as pivoting returns with a prize for top score. Partners and names must be listed to form next week’s pairs tournament schedule. A. Ritchie and W. Huffman led with 8. T. Faram as runner up.
The Norval Rifle Club defeated the OAC at Norval Range with a 975 to 330 score. Norval shooters including M. Atkinson and G. H. Hall posted strong aggregates as OAC plans a return visit while the home range closes next Monday night.
