Soldier Bdr iKen Richardson writes from Normandy about calm days and noisy air battles overhead. He notes Spitfires engaging enemy fighters, a pilotless 1000 lb bomb, and tanks burning after being hit. He mentions water scarcity for civilians, eggs traded for sardines, and parcels arriving from home as letters and photos come through.
The past week brought a wet spell with Wednesday night and Thursday forenoon as the year’s heaviest rains. An electrical storm caused some damage but less than nearby Orillia, which seeks government aid. Locally the rain spurred lush growth and good crop prospects. rainfall and temperatures are listed for several days.
A horse run-away at Weston's Bakery rigs injured driver Ray Gerry as he tried to guide the team at Queen and Guelph Streets. Gerry was thrown, suffered head cuts, and was taken to hospital after the horse bolted past the Rectory. The animal swerved around the building before being captured.
The Norval Midget Lacrosse Team, 2–1 on the season, beat Brampton 6–5 and 6–4 after a 8–2 loss to Inglewood. They host Brampton at Clover Bowl tomorrow night at 7 15 p.m. with strong local support urged.
The King has authorized the 1939 43 Star for service in World War II theatres during 1939 to 1943. It ranks after the Africa Star. Ribbon colors signify Naval Merchant Navy red Army and Air Force. Canadian Army personnel discharged may claim with proof of service and eligibility forms from any Army Recruiting Station in Military District No. 2.

John Alexander Erwin a Georgetown native and long-time Sarnia resident died July 14 in Sarnia General Hospital after a brief illness. He was 78, survived by five brothers including Robert H. of Georgetown Charles G. in East Rochester NY Edward Frederic of Georgetown and Lorne B. of Toronto, wife Martha Kennedy predeceased him, no children, funeral held in Greenwood Cemetery Georgetown with Robb Funeral Home service in Sarnia.
Mrs. W R Watson, departing Tuesday for a Grimsby residence, was guest of honour at several gatherings. She received a refrigerator set at a high tea hosted by Mrs. W G O Thompson and Mrs. D W Baxter, a bridge party by Mrs. Harold McClure, and a tea by Mrs. William Miller where a Wedgewood vase and jug were presented.
Weather boosts crops in Manitoba Saskatchewan and Ontario while Alberta faces below normal yields due to insufficient rainfall. Quebec and Maritime Provinces report favorable growth with average to above average hay and root crops. fruit crops show good promise though cherries yield off. Norval district mourns the July death of LAC William Charles Carney in a burn accident at the Bagotville Quebec RCAF hangar. He was 21, son of C W Carney and the late Mrs Carney, with funeral honors at Allos United Church Norval and interment at Hillcrest Cemetery Norval. Survived by his father two sisters and five brothers living in Peel and Norval.
Miss Jessie Oliver resigns after sixteen years as supervisor of Cedarvale School for Girls due to ill health. Mrs O M Houston succeeds her, bringing training and Deaconness experience from the United Church in Toronto. Staff Paula Arthurs and Iva Margeson remain. Margeson notes all pupils who tried entrance exams passed, with three gaining honours.
Rev. Charles Cochran of Knox Presbyterian will receive the Bachelor of Divinity from Victoria University Toronto at a special mid summer convocation Friday evening July 28. Since Knox College graduation five years ago he pursued post graduate studies at Queen's Theological College Kingston and Emmanuel College Toronto.
Pte Jack Bailey learned from his parents that his troop ship was struck twice by Germans and sunk during D-Day invasion. He spent two hours in the Channel before rescue, lost clothing, and stayed in England hospitals for weeks. Bailey, in RCASO, enlisted nearly two years ago and went overseas a year ago this month.
The Grand Lodge of the Masonic Order for Ontario met at Central Technical School Toronto with attendees including Hugh Dickie P.M. appointed to Grand Steward granting the title Very Worshipful. Georgetown Lodge honoured him and Wor. Bro. Green of Guelph was elected District Deputy Grand Master while Tim Wardley of Elora is named Grand Master.

The War Time Prices and Trade Board will issue coupons for extra meals served to farm labor. Applications at the Local Ration Board require only essential facts. Farmers employing workers two weeks or more should have workers obtain their own ration books on arrival.

A severe electrical storm last Wednesday night caused widespread outages for four to five hours as two street light relays and two transformers were blown and several lightning arrestors failed. Damage included a lamp socket, a broken chimney, and blown fuses. crops in the district were flattened but overall losses are not expected to be severe.
The Georgetown and Limehouse Presbyterian churches held a joint Sunday School picnic at Stanke Park Erin on Saturday July 15 with over 160 attendees. Activities included swimming races and games followed by a supper prepared by church ladies and organized sports led by the minister.
Matt Kenny and his 16 piece Western Gentlemen orchestra visit Brampton for a Maple Leaf Club dance on Saturday July 29. Proceeds go to the canteen with Miss Toronto and Miss War Worker as attractions. The group previously drew a crowd over a thousand last Thanksgiving.
