Ken Richardson, son of Mr. cnt Age Agen spy two days after D Day, sends vivid letters from England describing the Normandy landing. He quotes Dwight Eisenhower’s message and relates landing night, artillery, air bombardment, and a briefing from Allied forces as Allied forces push toward victory in 1944.
Mr. and Mrs. Eric Warnes wed at the United Church South Porcupine Ontario on June 24 with Rev. John Croasisy Thompson officiating. Bride given in marriage by her father John Watson a lookout man near Night Hawk Lake. Afterward a dance at Golden City Hall raised gifts totaling 24 dollars from Preston East Dome Mines workers.
Fifty children and about fourteen Legion W.A. members enjoyed a sunny park outing last Thursday afternoon. Mrs Pred Mc Cartney and Brs. Thomas Grieve led sports. supper was prepared by Mrs. Dickenson Glen Williams and Mrs. Robert Osin. Prizes awarded: Boys and girls under 6 all received. winners include Frank Carter Billy Hewitt. Zollen Dickerson Lorrie Givens. Mabel Shepherd Pat Wilson. Denis McCartney Fred Birls. Bello Tennant Joan.
Georgetown residents are invited to contact William Roney, newly appointed local Recruiting Officer, to learn about joining the Armed Forces. Eligible men may receive information, and transportation can be arranged locally. contact at the Legion Hall or Market Street home.
Mrs and Mrs Walter T Hyans received a cable stating their elder son Flying Officer John Taylor Evans was killed in action on July 14 1944 Burial occurred July 18 at Kirk Andreas Church Yard Isle of Man Evans born October 11 1910 Georgetown Ontario educated locally and at the University of Toronto He enlisted after working as Edmonton representative for Johnson and Johnson. He trained as an Air Bomber at Portage la Prairie and arrived overseas in October 1943 Promoted to Flying Officer He is survived by his parents one brother James F P Evans and three sisters Ruth Jean Evare Bmiale and Margaret Jeffery
The local Lawn Bowling Club held its First Invitation Tournament with sixteen pairs across Acton Milton Brampton and local teams. Winners were Charters Henderson Dickie with prizes presented by S T Puram. Playdowns for Provincial Titles begin July 17 with Acton Milton and Georgetown entries competing in doubles and rinks.
A wheel barrow crafted by Herbert Preston filled with groceries donated by Mrs. Herbert Preston was won by Mr. Bob in the afternoon draw. Garden hats by Mr. Tom Beaumont added to the fund, plus home made baking from Mrs. Wagstaffe. A Crawford cake went to Mrs. Hadley as music by Miss McMaster accompanied the tea hour.
Sgt Cyril Clarke arrives in Canada from Italy after three years overseas with the Lorne Scots and Saskatoon Light Infantry. He reports high troop morale despite tough fighting at Moro River and notes a stormy crossing aboard the Hospital Ship Lady Nelson. Clarke spent a few weeks with Mrs Clarke at Niagara Falls before settling back in town.
L Corporal J B Dent praised for saving comrades under fire in Italy as a first aid man with a Canadian engineers company. His parents Nelson and Mrs Dent of Milton receive a copy of The Maple Leaf. he is a nephew of Alf Rolfe of Georgetown and known locally. He helped three wounded men and cleared mines while advancing under heavy German shelling.
Robert Joyce of Fourth Line Esquesing died after a long illness with four strokes. He lived his life in the district and was a member of Coureh. Rev. John Riddell and Rev. Shannon conducted the funeral service on Wednesday. He leaves three brothers William Richard of Toronto Milton three children Mary Thomas and Finlay and three grandchildren. His wife died last December. Interment was at Evergreen Cemetery Milton.
The Lorne Scots camp at Niagara-on-the-Lake featured strong weather after heavy rains, with 67 degree weekly average. Lt. J. Wrigglesworth led sports events including a 24-16 win by O company Georgetown over Brampton, plus strong relay and sprint showings and 400 pound rope tug of war. Camp training intensified with each unit receiving transport and weapon specialities. Public visitors praised the camp and band as top in Canada.
Lieutenant Hayden Asselin husband of Phyllis Whitmee dies in France from wounds received July 6. A two year overseas veteran who served with the Cornwall Regiment after returning to Canada for an instructor’s course. The Whitmees learn of the death early this week.
Official word reaches Toronto family that Pte George Tarzwell of the Queen's Own Rifles has been killed in France at age 23. Son of Mr and Mrs Harry Tarzwell of Toronto, he grew up in Limehouse and Georgetown and enlisted after war began. survived by parents a brother Howard and four sisters.
A condensed report of a church picnic program at Norval Union Presby and the races held. Winners spanned ages from 6 to 20 plus open events with names including Velma Hunter Mary Reid Sally Clure James Cunningham Harvey Hazel Marjory MacDonald Bill Reid Bob Leslie Norman McClure Patsy Patterson Betty Reid Marilyn Cunningham Alma Mae Hunter Lorpa McClure Bill Cunningham John McNelly Harry Singer and others. The afternoon opened with lunch served by William Burns and Rev J L Self and concluded with an open final event.
