Direct flights between Montreal and the United Kingdom are operated with no intermediate stops. The service can carry up to 8,000 pounds of mail and freight including parts and equipment vital to the war effort. No fare-paying passengers are transported.
The town has been calm over the past two weeks with farmers busy making hay under dry weather. The Lorne Scots Reserve and Band held camp near Niagara-on-the-Lake drawing about 350 men from Georgetown and surrounding centres while mills and businesses observed holidays. Camp activities included intensive training led by Lieut. Col. L. Bertram and Maj. N. Lt. Pownell with travel by bus train and boat to Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Pte Alex Miller arrived back in Glen Williams last Thursday night after returning to Canada on the Hospital Ship. Miller, of the First Contingent, joined the Lorne Scots in 1930 and suffered serious hip and chest injuries in Italy. He is now active again after months of convalescence. De Daly Feeet served with the Saskatoon infantry.
About forty members of the Women's Missionary Society met at Miss Anne Braunton's home on July h for the season’s last gathering. Mrs. A. M. Nielsen opened, with devotional led by Miss Elk Mac Kay and Mrs. R. Jones. Participants included Miss Many Campbell, Miss Isabel McDermid, Mrs. Elma King, Mrs. McEnery, and McKay.
Early rains and warm weather boost crops with wheat barley oats and corn promising good yields. Haying is active and quality excellent. pastures drying up without rain. Fruit and vegetables show promise with early potatoes peas beans and tomatoes noted. Some damage from pests mentioned. rain on Tuesday aided farmers and market gardeners.
The July gathering of the Women's Institute met at Mrs Robinson's home. After a brief business session the afternoon featured card games with prizes awarded for travelling high and low scores, total scores, and a time race. A picnic lunch followed and thanks were given to the hostess for an enjoyable afternoon.
Princes Madeline Given daughter of Mrs. T Appleyard Georgetown wed Edward Lerch son of Mr and Mrs Jacob Lerch Hes peler in a ceremony at Knox Presbyterian Manse conducted by Rev O C Cochrane on Saturday afternoon July 8. The bride wore a blue afternoon dress with white accessories and was attended by Miss Charlotte McCullough in pink with white accessories. After a short wedding trip the Lerchs will reside in Preston.
Stewart G. Bennett of Toronto and Georgetown has been elected to the board of directors of the Canadian Bronze, with ties to the crest of the mountain on the Tth Line near Baitinafad.
Corporal Brock Harley of the 58th Battery based in Lindsay has been wounded in France. The report from his father, Dean Harley, notes multiple abrasions and a foot injury. Harley, tied to his wife Dianne Perrott of Brampton, is one of four brothers in the Canadian Army and was among first local casualties in Normandy.
The garden wedding of Margaret Eather Evans and Charles Standon Jeffery took place Saturday July 8 with a trellis of red roses and lilies. The Rev R Todd officiated as family and friends from Georgetown Woodbridge Detroit and Toronto attended. The newlyweds will reside at Pall Brook Farm Glen Williams.
Mr and Mrs A H Jones of Barrie received a cable announcing the death of their son Sergeant Air Gunner George A Jones on active service overseas on July 4. Burial was at Wellwood Cemetery Surrey England. George, a nephew of Captain and Mrs Roger Guyot of Toronto, joined the RAF in 1939 and went overseas in February 1942. He trained as an air gunner in England and was in his second year.
Heavy heat and drought stress crops in Huttonville district as the Ontario Farm Service Force sets up a girls camp at Huttonville Public School to assist market gardeners and fruit farms. Camp headquarters, dormitories, a wash house, electric stove, and supervision by the National Council YWCA. 21 girls present with capacity for 46.
Georgetown mourns Lieut John Bowman aged twenty one who died in action in France while serving with the British Army. A Georgetown High School graduate and Reserve Army veteran, he trained in Canada and Britain before being posted to the Royal Scots Fusiliers. Survived by his parents a brother and a sister.
Stewarttown Public School presents June reports listing teachers and honorees for grades VI to VII including Barbers Cromar and Donald Lawson. Grade V to VI names Julia De Vries June Thompson Norman Carhart Sylvia Barrow Margaret Murray. Grade IV to V Billy Murray Evalonne Smith Betty Barrow. Grace I to O Betty Humphreys and Betty Ann Henderson. MISS M. L. WHITE, Teacher.
The Holstein Friesian Association sent $2648.82 to the Canadian Red Cross Society in Toronto from the Glenafton Laurel Blossom raffle profits. The drawing occurred at the Brampton National Holstein sale won by J. Sharp of Moose Jaw. proceeds added $1600 to earlier Dominion wide ticket sales.
Word from Calgary confirms Paratrooper Alfred Blair age 20 was killed in action June 10 during the Normandy invasion. Blair, born in Chaplin Saskatchewan, moved to Calgary in 1926 where he was educated and joined the Highlanders and later the artillery before transferring to airborne forces. He leaves his parents, two sisters, and a brother, all in Canada.
The fifteenth Gastle family reunion took place on Saturday July 6 at the home of Mr and Mrs George Readhead Longville Ontario. About 1% of the clan enjoyed the afternoon with ball games races. A gift was given to Mrs Mary Featherstone of Hamilton as the oldest attendee and to Miss Irene Lawton of Toronto as the youngest. Ed Caven and wife of London received a prize for traveling the farthest distance. Guests came from Georgetown Toronto Hamilton London and Niagara Falls Ontario.
