The Halton Women’s Institute held its 39th annual gathering at Knox Presbyterian Church Milton with 18 of 21 institutes represented. Mrs. Arthur Cowan presided and welcomed guests, reports praised war work and Red Cross efforts, and Federation Board notes urged cooperation with the Chamber of Agriculture and Home Economics programs for 1940 41.

Mrs Lafura Scott among first prize winners in the Globe and Mail Convoy contest. Top score across 24 games was 26976 with 215 entrants reaching that mark. A vote on a tie breaker or splitting the prize led to $3520 shared. each winner received 16.37. Another first prize recipient was Charlotte Campbell of Milton.

Death of signalman Swindlehurst in Fraser loss at sea
The war reaches home with the death of signalman John C. Swindlehurst of Dixon Ave Toronto cousin of Mrs W H Cole and Mr Fred Sinclair of Georgetown. Swindlehurst died when the Canadian destroyer Fraser was sunk off the coast of France. He would have been 24 on July 12 and served from Halifax to the West Indies aboard HMCS Fraser, later serving with the Royal Navy in the war zone. He is survived by his parents and sister Betty.

Lorne Scots Win Best Military Band at Waterloo Festival
At the eighth annual Waterloo Musical Society band festival, the Lorne Scots Band topped the Military Bands open class with 91 points, beating Chatham Kettle Band by one point. Bill Long won the flat horn under 25 with 85 points, and Charles Landsborough with Joseph Wilcox claimed the corner duet open title with 85. William Hitchcox of Oakville earned two prizes in the flat tenor saxophone events.

Mr and Mrs W H Anthony marked their golden anniversary with family of four sons and five daughters including Frank of Harriston William Joseph Frea and Mrs Winnifred Roszel of Acton and Mrs Fred Brooks Limehouse and Mrs Jack Fox Miss Florence Anthony and Mrs K R McDonald of Georgetown. About eighty five neighbors attended as guests aged 88 and 1 were the oldest and youngest respectively. Guests traveled from Babinafad Orr Lake Toronto Guelph Elm Orangeville and Hamilton. A gold decorated buffet table and cake were features with the cake cut by the bride of fifty years and tea poured by Mrs Frank Anthony.

Mason Appointed to Lead New Royal Regiment Battalion
Col Mason of Georgetown is appointed to command a new battalion formed by the Royal Regiment of Canada. The unit, non permanent active militia, aims for full wartime strength with a permanent officer staff. It will occupy Fort York Armouries this week as general recruiting begins, with training including evening drills and a summer camp period.
