Ottawa reports a sweeping mobilization bill to conscript under 45 for military training and to mobilize wealth for war. The finance minister unveils a vast budget with taxes rising, luxury levies, import duties, and a goal to fund war needs while maintaining economic stability.
Miss Ruth James daughter of Mrs G James has multiple showers ahead of her June 29 wedding to Thomas Hoare of Brampton. At Miss Marjory Hunter home guests enjoyed a kitchenware shower and a miscellaneous shower at Mrs Allan Norton’s. A utility shower at Mrs William Roney Sr included games and a mock marriage. Lunches were served and gifts praised by the bride to be.
Transcontinental Trip One of the TCA diverted to North Bay for a mercy stop. A shipment of serum from the Banting Institute in Toronto was rushed to North Bay Hospital. The plane was held 10 minutes at Malton Airport for the serum.
The Western Fair in London Ontario has been cancelled for this year. The fair grounds are being used for military purposes.
Families invited to host refugee children in Halton and Peel counties should apply to the Children's Aid Society of Peel and Halton in Milton Ontario. Communications addressed to G F Thompson Superintendent Milton.
A Friday gathering at Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Ruddell home June 21 celebrated the about to marry Elizabeth Preece and Murray Brigden with lawn games singing and a large basket of gifts. The Ashgrove W I presented a serving tray and lunch ended the evening. The Ashgrove WI executive met June 18 to plan 1940 4 programs. A Flower and Children's Day service impressed with church bouquets and a children's choir. Mr and Mrs Harvey Wilkin and daughters visited from Little Current. Mr C B Dick and his brother Peter Dick drove to Port Elgin for the weekend.
Sunday visitors from Listowel with local hosts as W.A. and WMS groups meet for June sessions. The Red Cross drive, a forthcoming shower for Miss Blanch Wright, and a church Sunday School picnic at Stanley Park, Erin, with planned July meetings and readings by several members.
LIMEHOUSE reported Mrs Wright Mr Wright Miss Shirley and Mr Alex Wright attended the Morrison Wright wedding in Erin township on Saturday. Miss Eleanor Millibcre holidaying with grandparents. Mr Harding Price entertained Sunday School at his home Saturday afternoon. Miss Olive Marshall and aunt Mrs Forbes of Toronto spent a week at their old home. Mr and Mrs Wm Hall and Master firs Hal spending holidays here.
Captain and Mrs. Poulton leave Brampton Georgetown and Acton duties for Lippincott Street Toronto Corps after three years in charge. They commend clergy and Georgetown citizens for war fund drive support. Major and Mrs. Sanford will succeed them, bringing thirty years of Salvation Army experience from Mr. Dennis.

Stewarttown reports weekend visits and local events. At the June W I meeting Eleanor Graham and Irene Leslie discussed the Junior Convention in Guelph. Queen Victoria’s wedding centennial celebrated in Toronto. Highlights include current events, district meeting reports, piano solos, and Red Cross work summaries. Baptisms at St John’s Church and weekend visitors listed.
July 12 festivities in Brampton unite Halton with participants from Waterloo York Dufferin and Peel counties in a patriotic event. Local organizers describe the gathering as a civic celebration of heritage.
The Herald notes December early voting for Milton and Elora as popular practice. D L Mundell firm of Erin lands seven home contracts. Elora Express bids for tourism while publisher Anne Anderson Perry cites Canada’s active service push.
The undermentioned Georgetown High School students scored 500 or more in each Middle School Departmental subject. Passed students and failed marks will be sent by the Department of Education Toronto. Other Middle and Lower School standings appear next week in the Herald.
