Dr. Ern Hyde, finance chairman, explains an $8,000 working capital reserve will reduce current borrowing and interest costs. The surplus could cut the tax rate, while funds for industrial development depend on Highway subsidy decisions and may be substantial.
A string of accidents reported around Maple Guelph Island results in over four hundred dollars in damage from a skid at Mill and Water streets to rear end collisions on Guelph Street. Gra ham Ferguson, 2 Bairstow Crescent, caused a parked Beaver Lumber Co truck to be struck. A boy, Brian Hastings, seven, was injured after his bicycle collided with a car on Back Street. Other collisions on Guelph Street near Detrex Boulevard and at Guelph Street Delrex Boulevard added to the tally, with total damages listed and a man named Jack Stanley Wright hospitalized after striking a traffic island.
A 43 year old Burlington housewife, eee wee land, broke her back in a Friday night car crash at Hornby. She traveled in a car driven by her husband James Woodland, which swerved into a ditch. About $3,000 damage, car towed by Garnett Howden. Woodland had facial cuts. son Scott, 16, unhurt. Constable William Joyce investigated. no other car involved. cause unknown.
The Baptist Church presented attendance awards to students who attended 48 or more Sundays.Recipients included Gail Thompson Allan Emmerson Debbie McCosh Mark Buttrey Lawrence Peck Brian Livingstone Scott Livingstone Paul Thompson Keith Peck Tommy Robson Keith Robson Bruce Peck Cindy Emmerson Linda Peck Mary Jane Emmerson Peggy Taylor Joy Emmerson Ellen Emmerson Ron McCosh Tim Norton and Cathy Buttrey. The event followed Christmas parties for senior intermediate and junior classes on Friday Dec 9 and Primary Kindergarten Cradle Roll on Saturday Dec 10 after the Santa Claus Parade. Rev. L E Wilton spoke on Christmas in India where he served in missions. The gathering featured recitations carols lunch and a carol sing with Santa visits.

The Standard Products Local 876 Christmas party filled the Legion Hall with children and parents last Saturday. Ron Anderson welcomed attendees, followed by carols led by Bobo the Clown and piano by Jim Rundle. Mr Magic performed rope and vanish tricks as Santa arrived to gift each child while Bobo handed out fruit and candy. A vote of thanks honored the Recreation Committee chaired by Elizabeth McNeilly with several volunteers.
A well known old time fiddler and CBC performer George Cye Crawford, 37, died suddenly in Toronto General Hospital on December 3. He lived in Powassan and was the brother of Mrs Sandy McDonald of Main Street South. He leaves his wife two children and several brothers and sisters.
Rev Ian Fleming submits his resignation from the Cedarvale Community Centre Board. He thanks council for the privilege and praises fellow members. Dr Smith regrets the departure as unfortunate for the board and town. Fleming will begin a new pastorate in Preston at the start of the year.
In a rare display of consensus at Council meetings, council unanimously invited Miss Dolly-Anne Edmonds, Ontario Dairy Princess, to the fair and possibly to judge a Miss Town contest later this year. A civic group supporting Centennial celebrations suggested the idea, with all councillors volunteering for committees and the mayor noting the invitation was added to his letter.
A large bonfire to start the centennial year and dispose of discarded Christmas trees is planned for January 14 in the field beside the plaza. Lions Club backs the event, town workers will dump trees at the site, and officials expect it to boost town activity while financing for a reservoir project is to be covered by four annual per capita levies per a Credit Valley Conservation Authority letter.
Georgetown district singers toured Kennedy Public School area collecting donations for Georgetown and District Memorial Hospital and the Cancer Society. The choir honored late member David Hall, with $65 raised in his memory during Tuesday night carolling.
A Georgetown resident was bilked of 1450 dollars in a bank inspector con game. Police said the victim, a 37 year old woman, received a call from a man posing as a bank inspector who instructed her to withdraw 1450 from her account and hand it to another inspector displaying a street code.
Members of Knox Presbyterian Church gathered in the church hall after Sunday services to bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs. Ted Fenning of 30 Park Ave as they prepare to move to Mitchell next week. Wreaths and an attache case were given. Mrs. Fenning, CGIT reader and Knox Ladies Auxiliary member, received group presentations for her service.
Mrs Grace Ellis of 6 Market Street Brampton won the lodge Christmas cake draw conducted by Verduh Rebekah Lodge CP and T Fund. Mrs Walsh oversaw the draw at the regular lodge meeting on Tuesday December.
