Georgetown council debates funding for a 624000 gallon Orangeville reservoir project in the Credit Valley Conservation Authority plan. Town would pay about 3700 dollars per year during wartime years. debate centers on extra costs and benefits, with Mayors and reeves clashing over CVCA decisions and future park plans.
Mountainview residents represented by Mr Delmar Majuery and Mr G Webster asked the Public School Board to provide a school bus for their children citing long and dangerous walks from homes to Wrigglesworth School. They suggested parent contributions if needed. the board will study costs.
The Herald faced layout errors with four misplaced pictures as presses rolled. A rushed fill in hid the real front page tree for sale at Kinsmen lot, edited pages showed wrong Brampton and Lyons homes, sports page carolers misidentified Doris Barrager’s curling team, and Ryders TV misrepresented colour TV offers.
Despite a heavy drizzle that reduced the 35th annual Georgetown Lions Santa Claus Parade by half, Santa delivered his Ho Ho Ho, and kids gathered candy downtown after a 1:30 start. Awards recognized best floats from Globe Productions, Imperial Section Legion, J H Lever Co, Town of Georgetown, Mrs Elizabeth Carney, Flintstones, and the Skating Club, while many units participated and prize drawings crowned holiday dinners.
Council Monday rejected a bid by Harrison to keep any sewer surplus in the public works budget for next year’s John St pump station improvements. Earlier, a road surplus plan to fund three unfinished projects was approved. Dr. Harrison, Dr. Speight, and Dr. Hyde clashed over emergency sewer backups cited for 17 years with no standby equipment. Mayor Gibbons pressed for a recorded vote, noting accountability if actions fail. Only Dr. Speight backed the motion in the vote.
A by law requiring permits to post signs in Georgetown was withdrawn for further study after one reading. The council sent it back to committee. Dufferin Street near the White Bridge will become one way. John D Ord was reappointed to the Georgetown District high school board for a further three year term.
A total of $365,039 in building permits was issued in November, a high amount for this time of year. In October the total was $73,930. Both months the permits were primarily residential.
Esquesing township councils and the school board, meeting to discuss rising education costs, approve a ten room addition to Stewarttown school to become a senior public school. Estimated total cost 428000 with 380000 debentured and the rest from surplus and current revenue. The plan adds four classrooms two auxiliary rooms a home economics room industrial arts room a general purpose room and library Run on a rotary system and housing grades seven and eight plus ancillary classes.
Georgetown Kinettes organized a Christmas toy drive after an outpouring of dolls, tricycles, skates, sleighs, and rocking horses arrived at Kinette Trudy Lavoie's home. Husbands from the Kinsmen aided in repairing items as the group dressed dolls and prepared toys to join hampers from the Welfare Office for a brighter holiday morning.
